GOETHE FILMS: AFTERMATH: ECHOES OF WAR
8 + 10 + 15 October 2024
GET TIX 25 Sep!
GOETHE FILMS explores the profound and enduring impact of wars on societies, and the multi-generational trauma they leave within communities. The New German Cinema movement (1960s to 1980s), influenced by the French New Wave and Italian Neorealism, played a crucial role in addressing post-war struggles and the crippling disruption fascism had dealt German film culture after the artistic heydays of Weimar Cinema. Through this bold artistic movement, the children of the war grappled with the shattered world they were left with and the complexities of a rapidly changing new society.
Inspirational and sharp storytellers Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Alexander Kluge and Wim Wenders were the leading young representatives of New German Cinema, transcending time and borders with its films which continue to shed light on the universal human experience in the aftermath of war. Three now-classic films of that generation serve as poignant reminders of the personal and societal repercussions of conflict, echoing themes of resilience, identity, belonging, and the search for meaning and agency in a world marked by unimaginable upheaval.
Alexander Kluge has added two of his shorts to the series, Bomb as Plow (8 October) and Song of Medea (10 October).
Aftermath: Echoes of War is expanded by an online collection of German films from the last two decades, including more recent post-migrant war experiences like Nasim and Republic of Silence. Presented for free in the USA and Canada on our streaming platform Toronto.Goethe-on-Demand.de from 1 Oct-3 Nov 2024.
