From the Berlinale 2024 Berlinale Special Section

The Empty Grave sheds light on a neglected chapter of history: German colonial crimes in Africa and their still palpable consequences. In the late 19th century, the skulls of murdered Africans were brought to Germany, where they remain in collections and museums – largely unacknowledged and rarely discussed. The film offers an intense, personal perspective on the global debate around repatriation and the ongoing suffering of descendants of colonial violence.
