Roland Schimmelpfennig studied stage directing at the Otto Falckenberg School in Munich. Subsequently, he was assistant director and assistant to the artistic director of the Munich Kammerspiele. He has been a freelance writer since 1996. His first play Die ewige Maria was premiered at the Oberhausen Theatre. Since then he has written numerous plays, performed in more than 40 countries. His first novel was published in 2016. Entitled One clear, ice-cold January morning at the beginning of the 21st century, the novel was shortlisted for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize. Roland Schimmelpfennig has won several prizes, including the Mühlheim Drama Award. He lives in Berlin and Havana.
