Oliver Bottini studied German, Italian and Marketing & Advertising Psychology in Munich. He then worked as a freelance editor and author. In 2002 he published his first non-fiction book Das große O.W. Barth-Buch des Zen, followed in 2004 by his debut novel Zen and the Art of Murder: A Black Forest Investigation. This marked the start of a successful crime series about Chief Inspector Louise Boni, for which Bottini received numerous awards. For example he was awarded the German Crime Fiction Prize and the Heinrich Böll Foundation Prize for the best political crime novel of the year. Bottini lives in Frankfurt am Main.
