Innovation and Inclusion: EU Innovation Grants Empower Western Balkan Public Service Media Istock

We are delighted to announce the results of the second call for innovation project grants for Western Balkan public service media. Five Western Balkan public service broadcasters received up to 60,000 euros for their innovation projects to improve their content, engage new audiences, and address issues ranging from youth engagement, accessibility for the disabled, cultural heritage preservation, sustainability, and the integration of new technologies.

A Blueprint for Future Development

These grants reflect a strategic commitment by the EU to not only enhance the operational capacities of public service broadcasters but also to promote inclusivity, technological advancement, and sustainable practices within the media sector. Each project supported under this initiative aims to make significant strides in content quality, audience engagement, and digital proficiency, aligning with the broader goals of media freedom and democratic participation in the region.

Radio and Television of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (RTVFBiH) is focusing on a digital transformation project that enhances multimedia content delivery across various platforms, aimed particularly at younger audiences.

Radio and Television of Montenegro (RTCG) is establishing a Regional Studio in the town of Ulcinj, focusing on high-quality content production in the Albanian language to foster greater inclusion and intercultural dialogue.

Macedonian Radio Television (MRT) is integrating cutting-edge VR and AR technologies, enhancing interactive viewer engagement and modernizing content production.

Radio and Television of Serbia (RTS) is developing the "The Balkan Postcard Journey," a multimedia project that explores shared cultural elements across the Western Balkans, aiming to connect with young audiences and bridge regional divides.

Radio and Television of Vojvodina (RTV) is implementing text-to-speech and speech-to-text technologies, enhancing accessibility for audiences with visual and hearing impairments.

Strategic Initiatives to Foster Media Excellence

These five innovation projects will begin in March 2025 and will run for 12 months. During the first call earlier in 2024, five grants were awarded to innovation projects by public service broadcasters in the region focusing on advancing children, youth and minority programming, upgrading technology, improving content, and boosting community engagement.

Managed by the Goethe-Institut, on behalf of the European Commission and in collaboration with its implementing partner DW Akademie, the EU-funded "Innovation. Media. Minds: EU Support to Public Service Journalism in the Western Balkans" continues to play a crucial role in supporting the Western Balkans' journey towards European integration, demonstrating the power of strategic funding in transforming public service media.
