REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDYING IN GERMANY

Before you enroll at an university, it is important to have the recognition of your foreign school-leaving certificate checked in Germany in advance.

For holders of Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE), Hong Kong Certificate of Education (HKCE), Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKAL), International Baccalaureate (IB) or equivalent, you can enroll directly on the homepage of the university of your choice.

Taking HKDSE for example: 

Hong Kong students are required to reach a minimum requirement of Level 3 in all HKDSE subjects^.

^Level 3 in Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics, and 2 other electives (Category A), and "Attained" in Citizenship and Social Development.

Proof of German Proficiency

Most of the universities in Germany provides English-taught degree programmes, which are internationally recognised. As of 2025, a total of 2428 English-taught International programmes are available in Germany. For applications for this type of programmes, proof of German proficiency is generally NOT required.

For German-taught degree programmes, German universities generally requires a minimum level of B2, e.g. attaining TDN-4 in all TestDaF modules, or even a Goethe-Zertifikat C2: GDS. The specific requirement depends on admission policies of each universities individually.

GERMAN ACADEMIC EXCHANGE SERVICE (DAAD)

DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) is the world’s largest funding organisation for the international exchange of students and researchers.

Since it was founded in 1925, around 2.6million scholars in Germany and abroad have received DAAD funding. It is a registered association and its members are German institutions of higher education and student bodies. Its activities go far beyond simply awarding grants and scholarships. The DAAD supports the internationalisation of German universities, promotes German studies and the German language abroad, assists developing countries in establishing effective universities and advises decision makers on matters of cultural, education and development policy.

DAAD Hong Kong is responsible for promoting DAAD’s suite of scholarship and grant programs to scholars at all Hong Kong universities and serves as a first-point of contact for individuals interested in learning more about Germany as a destination for study or research.
