Hong Kong schools are keen on introducing German language instruction across different grade levels, including primary and secondary. Our aim is to provide individuals who are passionate about German with the opportunity to pursue a fulfilling career as German teachers in schools.
The primary target group for this program are students in their third year of study who are enrolled in the German program at HKU or have chosen the German branch of the "European Studies" program at HKBU.
Interested participants must have at least a high level of proficiency in German with a minimum of B1, as well as a strong desire to pursue a career as a German teacher at a local school in Hong Kong after completing their studies.
In addition, alumni of both universities may apply to participate in the pilot project. There are no participation costs for eligible participants.
The core of the German teacher training program is the Goethe-Institut's "Deutsch Lehren Lernen" (DLL) curriculum, which comprises a series of advanced educational courses that qualify teachers to teach German as a foreign language. Additionally, materials and tasks from the DAAD's "Dhoch3" program are used in parallel.
It is worth noting that practical experience is a crucial aspect of the training program. As part of the program, eligible participants will have the opportunity to apply for two Germany scholarships, one in summer 2024 and another in summer 2025, with a focus on linguistic and methodological-didactic training.
Moreover, we will also provide assistance in securing an internship at a Hong Kong school, thereby offering participants hands-on teaching experience.
