Design Matters Lab

The issue of global waste often overlooks the traditional industry system as a primary contributor, from the usage of exploitative materials and excessive production to the short lifespan of product design, which dramatically increases waste production..By 2030, this is expected to reach 2.01 billion tonnes of waste per year, as reported by the World Bank in 2023.

In response to this urgency, Design Matters Lab is taking action to disrupt industry practices. We call upon emerging designers from Indonesia and European countries to team up with micro-factories to transform industry models by utilising alternative materials, durable product designs, and sustainable production systems.

This 10-month programme will equip teams of designers and micro-factories to transform ideas into reality. Through online workshops, on-site residencies, and market-testing activities for participants will innovate new products and prepare them for global exposure and impact.

Design Matters Lab invites emerging design talents from European countries and Indonesia to work together, leveraging design principles to unlock the potential of alternative materials, ultimately translating them into innovative, eco-friendly products in the craft, design, and art sectors.

If you’re a professional maker, designer, craft practitioner, or material developer based in Indonesia or Europe (France, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, or the UK) with a passion for collaboration and a drive to develop and test bio-based materials using circular design processes for craft and design applications, this programme is the perfect opportunity to take your skills to the next level.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

This programme aims to facilitate and forge strong connections between Europe and Indonesia by fostering co-creation and collaboration through:
  1. Promoting design diplomacy through cultural understanding and global collaboration.
  2. Tackling local waste and climate challenges in Indonesia by harnessing innovation.
  3. Encouraging positive behavioural changes that promote sustainable living.
