Liebherr in Irland

Liebherr is widely regarded as one of the most iconic examples of the success of foreign direct investment in Ireland. Based in Killarney, the success story dates back to the foundation of Liebherr Ireland Ltd. in 1958. The company, now trading as Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd, originally produced tower cranes. The portfolio of Liebherr in Ireland has significantly expanded since its foundation with the group now owning three Irish companies. The activities range from maritime cranes and construction machines to hotels.
The Irish companies in the Liebherr Group are located at two places in Rathcoole near the capital Dublin and Killarney in the southwest of Ireland. Liebherr Container Cranes is regarded as a world leader in the supply of innovative container handling equipment. The ship-to-shore container cranes developed in Killarney are used in more than 100 ports throughout the world.
In the 1950s the company founder Hans Liebherr decided to construct his own hotel on an idyllic lakeshore site. The Liebherr Group developed Killarney Hotels Ltd. that now operates three luxury hotels in County Kerry.
Founded in 2008, Liebherr-Construction Equipment Ireland Limited is responsible for the sale and servicing of Liebherr construction machines in Ireland. The social and economic importance of Liebherr to the people of Killarney and beyond is very evident and has been well documented over the years.
