Having experienced a great deal in the course of his long professional life, chief police inspector Jakob Franck, who has recently retired, finds it difficult to bring things to a close. When an unknown visitor requests him to re-open a case that was filed as suicide 20 years ago, Franck sets out to investigate the background and to identify the reasons by talking to countless people. Seventeen-year-old Esther was found hanging from a tree. Her father believes it was murder.
