Like fables, the animals in Eva Menasse’s short stories reveal human nature and interpersonal relationships. Animals only appear in the title and in brief characterisations of strange phenomena from the animal world at the beginning of the stories. After that, the focus is on the pitfalls of everyday life: patchwork families, affairs, dementia, and dealing with strangers.
