Born in 1985 in Lahr in the Black Forest, Felix Baßlerstudied photography and social education at the University of Applied Sciences in Stuttgart and also trained as project manager for 'photo & social education’ in Heidelberg. He then completed various personal assistant positions with well-known photographers, such as Beat Presser in Switzerland, Alex Kayser († 2015) in New York City and Jan von Holleben in Berlin, where he learnt to play with analogue darkroom and studio lighting techniques.
After this, he travelled to Ukraine, Belarus, America and Asia for personal but also work -related photographic projects. For example, he travelled to Ukraine in 2013 to work with Stern Magazine about the topic “objectsexuality”. There he documented Sandro K. - a man who fell in love with the nuclear power plant Chernobyl. The story was never published.
In the following years he moved to Berlin, where he now works as freelance photographer in the fields of portrait, documentary for magazines like SZ, Stern, BILD, etc.
Felix's photographic work moves within the tension between documentary (reality) and staged photography (fantasy), as he seeks innovative tools to bridge these two worlds.
To achieve this, Felix works with the 'slit-scan' technique since 2022, which he continues to develop as an analogue process. This technique, being fully "in-camera," allows him to maintain a documentary quality while working within a surreal visual language.
Since then, there have been exhibitions and residencies of analogue slit-scan photography in Germany, Switzerland, Macedonia, America.
A major focus during his bangaloREsidency will be the further development of the analogue slit-scan photography technique. To do this, he will closely work with the Kāṇike photo community and develop the workflow of the slit-scan technology from portraying people in the streets of Bangalore to the finished print in the analogue darkroom.
