Born in Bangalore, India, Shruti Chamaria graduated from the Royal College of Art, London in 2017, after working as a graphic designer for a few years for organisations such as Alternative Law Forum (Bangalore, 2009), Studio Thomas Buxo (Amsterdam, 2010), CSCS (Bangalore, 2011), Art Asia Pacific (Hong Kong, 2012), CIS (Bangalore, 2014), Mumbai Art Room (Mumbai, 2015) and 1Shanthiroad (Bangalore, 2007-17).
Her practice deals with hyperreality of spaces, objects and memories, and her work in this regard has been shown at Rotterdam Photo Festival (2018), Offprint - Tate Modern (2018), Athens Photo Festival (2018) and J Book Show at Cork Photo Festival (2018). Her publication How to Sit for the Camera (2018) is also distributed by A6 Books, a subsidiary project of the London Centre for Book Arts (London), as well as MoMA PS1 (New York) and Printed Matter (New York).
During her bangaloREsidency-Expanded@Lichtenberg Studios, Shruti produced a photo-performance series that impishly explores architecture of transformation, the provocation of historical practices, and the embodiment of joy. The work captures recreated scenes, personal encounters, and a space to be private in public through the restored photoautomats (chemically operated photo booths located across Berlin).
