Technical preparation

Please perform a technical check before the examination and rectify any issues as they occur. All problems must be resolved before your appointment. Remember to switch your keyboard to German before starting the written examination. You can find instructions to do so here: Instructions: Changing the keyboard language to German (PDF, 490 KB) Please ensure that you have a stable Internet connection (10 Mbit/s) to be able to sit this examination (if necessary, switch off other devices that are also connected to the Internet). Close all browsers and applications that you do not need for the examination. This can help to avoid bandwidth problems during the examination. Make sure that your computer is connected to a power source . If you experience any technical issues immediately before your examination , please contact technical support: +49 0800-182-1105 . Technical support is provided in English. If you experience a technical issue during the examination , please inform the examination invigilator. If you still have internet access but the connection to the examination has been interrupted, please notify the examination invigilator via the chat function . If your internet connection is briefly interrupted, you will be automatically reconnected to the examination invigilator as soon as your connection is restored. If your examination can be restarted, your examination invigilator will do this for you. In this case, a new room check shall be required. You won’t lose any time if you experience a technical issue.

In order to ensure that you are alone in the room and do not use any unauthorised auxiliary materials, a 360° room check is required. This includes (but is not limited to) your desk surface and any other areas of the room that the examination invigilator may wish to check. The room check can be repeated several times during the examination if requested. Requirements include the following: You must be alone in the room during the examination. Please close all doors to your room before the start of the examination. You are not allowed to take the examination in a public place, such as a café. Only authorised identification materials are permitted on your desk and in your surroundings. No books lying around, electronic devices or a second monitor. Please position your table and chair so that the door to the room is visible to the examination invigilator. The examination invigilator may ask you to do this during the briefing. Make sure that your room is well lit . Rooms with large glass fronts are not permitted.

Prepare the materials you need for your examination (no other materials are permitted). You will need: A valid ID with photo (identity card or passport) Your mobile phone . The examination invigilator will ask you to switch it off. Potentially a hand mirror to ensure a 360° view of the room, even when the camera is stationary.

Q: Technical requirements

Please use a desktop or laptop computer for the examination. Tablets and mobile devices are not suitable for this. Please use only one monitor or screen; multiple monitors or dual screens are not permitted. Use an internal or external speaker and a microphone built into the computer or webcam to communicate with the invigilator, or to listen to the audio. Headsets or in-ear headphones are not permitted. You can use a camera built into the computer or a separate web camera . The camera must be able to be moved so that the examination invigilator has a 360° view of the room – including your table surface. If necessary, keep a hand mirror to hand if your camera cannot move 360°. Please use the Google Chrome™ browser to ensure that the examination process runs smoothly.

Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 online

Our German examination “Start Deutsch 1” for adults confirms foundation language skills at level A1.

The certificate is valid as proof of language proficiency for the visa in the event of spouse reunification.
The Online-Deutschprüfung comprises a written and an oral part.
The written part lasts 65 minutes. Here, you can practise listening, reading and writing individually on your computer under online supervision.
The oral examination lasts approx. 15 minutes and takes place during a separate appointment as a live online conversation with experienced examiners from the Goethe-Institut.
The Online-Deutschprüfung is open to people aged 18 and over.

How do I find my preferred date?

Choose your preferred date and book your examination. Important: please familiarise yourself with the examination requirements before booking and ensure that you meet them.
How does the written examination work?

Before the examination starts, there is a short briefing – including a 360° room check with the examination invigilator. You then start the examination. You have 65 minutes to listen, read and write.
How does the oral examination work?

A maximum of 14 days is allowed between the written and oral examination. The oral examination takes place in a live online conversation with experienced examiners from the Goethe-Institut and lasts approx. 15 minutes.
How do I get my certificate?

Once you have successfully passed the examination, you will receive your “Goethe-Zertifikat” in digital form within a few days. This serves as official and internationally recognised proof of your language skills.
