The revealing metaphoric in the works of Franz Kafka and the Indian author G. A. Kulkarni: A comparative study

Wandering Without Arriving
In his insightful essay on Franz Kafka, Ernst Fischer relates an interesting incident: When Max Brod read out the narrative prose of his friend for the first time (to a circle of friends in Prague) Franz Werfel is supposed to have said, nobody beyond "Tetschen-Bodenbach" would understand Franz Kafka's writing! Staring this 'truth' in the face is the truth of the enormity of Kafka’s reception the world over. Whether Kafka has been ‘understood’ or not, is debatable. But that is perhaps why he is read and re-read even by people who seem to have socio-culturally nothing in common with the German-speaking Jewish bureaucrat who lived in Prague - then a part of the Habsburg Monarchy - in the last quarter of the nineteenth century and the first quarter of the twentieth (1883-1924).
The Indian Marathi-language writer G.A. Kulkarni (1923-1987) was roughly a year old when Kafka died. G.A. (as he is known to the Marathi reader) was a scholar of English Literature, a prolific literary translator, a short-story writer, and - as is apparent in his correspondence with Sunitabai Deshpande - an extremely sensitive critic. G.A. had certainly read Kafka's writings, and Kafka was possibly an influence on his work, but this essay does not attempt to prove the theory, but instead aims to focus on the striking similarity between the two authors as perceived in the act of reading their works - the similarity of the effect that they have on the reader's mind.
Despite being literary creations of different times in history and of different socio-cultural milieus (one cannot speak of linguistic and cultural alienation in G.A.'s case, for example, as one could in Kafka's - of the peculiarly problematic situation the acculturated (German-)Jews of Czech-German Prague found themselves in), the thematic overlap between the two authors is obvious even in a cursory look at them: man's futile attempt at reaching a final destination, at 'arriving', at gaining absolute knowledge and freeing himself from the Angst (from the fear of the Unknown, the fear of death) which pervades his existence. Every conscious step that the self-confident, rational man takes towards reaching this end in fact brings him a step closer to the 'end'. This is the paradoxical foundation of the works of both these writers.
The cultural backdrop of their work is also different. Kafka's protagonists are mostly educated urban employed men reduced to an anonymity, to a ‘file’, by the impenetrable ‘machine’ of an opaque bureaucracy; they cannot come to terms with the demands of their own existence in the mayhem that Europe was during the first half of the twentieth century. G.A.'s major works were written after 1950 in post-colonial India, supposedly on the path of progress. His protagonists are mostly illiterate rurals or barely educated small-town folk, lost in the chores of an impoverished hand-to-mouth existence. But these constitute only the culture-specific topoi that the two writers use for the literary articulation of their world-view. They are not essential differences. The essentially one world-view comes through in their metaphoric: They posit the ethical necessity of constantly questioning logo-centric, uncritical thinking and behaviour, to reject all forms of institutionalised relationships, be it with another human being or with the numinous. This very act of questioning constitutes their unending search for truth. It is the common ethical-epistemological thread that runs through their entire body of work. What is equally apparent, is - to use, approximately, the language which a fair number of Kafka-critics and G.A.-critics use — the repetitiveness with which human 'inability' and 'failure' are portrayed by the two writers. Both have been branded as pessimists, as regressive thinkers, as nihilists and at times even neurotic.
The plurality of possible valid 'meanings' of a text which is inherent to the hermeneutic method of understanding, where the reader is a participant in the text's discourse, allows for a different reading of the so-called pessimists Kafka and G.A. Kulkarni. Starting from a point of view which discards the notion of finality at the very outset - a ‘wandering without arrival’ - it is possible to come to the understanding that the repetitive portrayal of human 'failure' itself portrays a conscientious, uncompromisingly self-critical attempt on the part of two extremely sensitive minds at understanding themselves — the world around and the world within. Writing becomes a form of self-reflection, positing its own necessity. The world without becomes the world within and vice versa. Positivism turns into the reflective. And what these minds see in the world 'outside' - the dehumanised chaos of more than 300 years of uncritical enlightenment — is dis-covered 'inside': the reckless zeal of an un-self-critical 'l' wanting to perpetuate itself. This reckless zeal of the self not willing to look at itself is man's crime, the undiscovered source of his guilt, which the metaphoric of the two texts, Kafka's "Der Proceß" (The Trial) and G.A.'s "Iskilar" reveals in flashes.
This metaphoric is the meditative expression of a self-critical mind whose only motivation is the possibility of perpetually discovering itself afresh. Its ‘autarkes Spiel’ (‘autarkical game’) - an expression Gerhard Neumann uses with respect to Kafka's “Ein Hungerkünstler” (A Hunger Artist) - with and against itself leads to a form of asceticism, a form of non-coercive, wilful acceptance, a welcoming of life in its totality, i.e. of the possibility of life alongside the certainty of death, of their togetherness. The stories of "A Hunger Artist" and the hunter in G.A.'s “Kanchanmrug” (The Golden Deer) could be read as expressions of this form of asceticism which does not reject life but welcomes it in its totality. The Hunger Artist and the Hunter are metaphors of men who (have) become conscious of their search as an unending search for themselves. Even death is not a terminus. They become metaphors of their creators, they are, in a sense, their (own) creators, the process of writing about life is the process of living.
An ascetic philosophy of life need not necessarily mean rejection of life. In fact it could mean acceptance of life at a deeper level - a level which touches the common psychological ground of all human life and at which humans are free of motivation, free of the desire for power because they are ethically aware. And the process of participative reading also becomes a metaphor of the process of the reader's life. The narrator, the character and the participative reader meet in the story, find themselves in it and part, only to meet again elsewhere but in the same story.

जी. ए. कुलकर्णी व फ्रान्झ काफ्का यांच्या कथा साहित्यातली मानवाच्या अंतरंगाचे विचक्षण
दर्शन घडवणारी रूपकात्मकता - एक तुलनात्मक अभ्यास
हे माझ्या पी एच डी प्रबंधाचे शीर्षक.१९९७ साली मूळ जर्मन भाषेत लिहिलेला हा प्रबंध जवाहरलाल नेहरू विश्वविद्यालयाच्या सेंटर ऑफ जर्मन स्टडीज विभागामध्ये सादर केला गेला व स्वीकृत करण्यात आला. हा प्रबंध लिहिताना मला जे एन यू च्या सेंटर ऑफ जर्मन स्टडीज चे प्रोफेसर राजेंद्र डेंगळे यांचे अनमोल मार्गदर्शन लाभले. ह्या प्रबंधाचा मराठीत सारांश लिहायचा हा प्रयत्न.
फ्रान्झ काफ्काच्या कथासाहित्यावरील एका अतिशय प्रबोधकारी अशा लेखाच्या अगदी सुरुवातीलाच ऑस्ट्रियन समीक्षक व विचारवंत एर्न्स्ट फिशर एक मजेदार किस्सा सांगतात.
काफ्काचा मित्र माक्स ब्रोड याने प्राग मधल्या आपल्या कवी-लेखक-समीक्षक मित्र मंडळींना काफ्काच्या काही कथा पहिल्यांदा वाचून ऐकवल्या तेव्हा त्या काळचे प्रसिद्ध कवी व नाटककार फ्रान्झ वेर्फेल म्हणाले होते: टेटचेन-बोडेनबाखच्या पलीकडे राहणाऱ्या कुणालाही काफ्का कधी कळणार नाही. म्हणजे ज्या शहराशी काफ्का जोडला गेलेला आहे त्या प्राग शहराच्या साधारण शंभर मैलांपलीकडे त्याचं लिखाण कुणाला कळणारच नाही!
हे झालं एक "सत्य". त्याच्या बरोबर विरोधात उभं ठाकलेलं दुसरं "सत्य" म्हणजे गेल्या जवळजवळ शतकाभरात काफ्काच्या कथा आणि कादंबऱ्यांना जगभर मिळालेला प्रतिसाद!! काफ्का लोकांना किती कळतो, किती कळला ही गोष्ट तशी वादातीतच. किंबहुना एका वाचनात पूर्ण कधी कळलासा वाटत नाही, आणि म्हणूनच वाचक त्याच्या कथा आणि कादंबऱ्या पुन्हा पुन्हा वाचतात. १८८३ ते १९२४ या काळात प्राग मध्ये, म्हणजे ऑस्ट्रियन साम्राज्यांतर्गत चेक भाषी प्रदेशामध्ये राहणाऱ्या एका जर्मन भाषी ज्यू परिवारात वाढलेल्या, वकील होऊन सरकारी नोकरी करणाऱ्या काफ्काशी सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक दृष्टीने, इतिहास-भूगोलाने पूर्णपणे अगदी अनिगडीत असे वाचकही ही आवर्तने करत राहतात.
अशा ह्या लेखकाच्या साहित्याचं आणि जी ए कुलकर्णी यांच्या कथासाहित्याचं समांतर तुलनात्मक वाचन करण्याचा प्रयत्न करण्याचं हे शिवधनुष्य मी उचललं. १९२३ ते १९८७ हा जी एंचा जीवनकाळ. इंग्रजी साहित्याचे प्रोफेसर, कथाकार, अनुवादक आणि -- त्यांच्या पत्रव्यवहारातून दिसून येतं त्याप्रमाणे -- एक अतिशय संवेदनशील असे समीक्षक.
जी ए आणि काफ्का ह्या दोन कथाविश्वांतून केलेल्या ह्या प्रवासाचा प्रस्थान-बिंदू म्हणजे दोघांच्या कथा वाचताना जाणवलेली आशयाधिष्ठित वा thematic जवळीक आणि वाचकाच्या मनात प्रकट होणारी प्रतिक्रिया, किंवा प्रतिसाद. ऐतिहासिक काळ व सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक पार्श्वभूमीच्या दृष्टीने ह्या दोन्ही साहित्यिक कृती अगदी भिन्न आहेत. काफ्काच्या बाबतीत आपण दुहेरी दूरत्व म्हणजेच भाषिक व सामाजिक परकेपणाबद्दल बोलू शकतो: चेक भाषिक प्रदेशात राहणारा जर्मन भाषी; आणि ऑस्ट्रियन-जर्मन साम्राज्यात सरकारी नोकरी करणारा ज्यू / यहुदी. असा भाषिक व सामाजिक परकेपणा जी एं ना जीवनात तेवढ्या तीव्रतेने सहन करावा लागला नसावा. आणि तरीही दोन्ही साहित्यकृतींमधील thematic नातं व जवळीक अगदी पहिल्या वाचनात सुद्धा ठळकपणे जाणवतात:
मानवाचा त्याच्या गंतव्य स्थळी पोहोचण्याचा, "आगमनाचा" सतत केलेला आणि सतत असफल होणारा प्रयत्न; आपल्या अस्तित्वाबाबतचं, आपल्या असण्याबाबतचं पूर्ण ज्ञान प्राप्त करून घेऊन जे गूढ व अनाकलनीय आहे, ज्या भयानं -- मृत्यूच्या भयानं -- मानवी मन पछाडलेलं आहे, त्या भयापासून 'कायमचं' मुक्त होण्याचा मानवाचा अविरत विफल प्रयास -- हे सारे काही दोन्ही ठिकाणी प्रत्ययाला येते.
विवेक, बुद्धी, शारीरिक ताकद यांच्या बळावर आपल्या भाग्याला, नियतीला आपल्या नियंत्रणाखाली आणू शकण्याचा आत्मविश्वास बाळगून राहिलेल्या मनुष्य प्राण्याने त्या दिशेनं उचललेलं प्रत्येक पाऊल त्याला त्याच्या उद्देशापासून दूरच घेऊन जातं -- हा मानवी जीवनाचा मूलभूत विरोधाभास दोन्हीकडे समान प्रमाणात पाहायला मिळतो.
ज्याप्रमाणे दोन्ही लेखकांचा जीवनकाळ व ऐतिहासिक-सांस्कृतिक परिस्थिती एकमेकांपासून भिन्न आहेत, त्याचप्रमाणे ह्या दोन्ही साहित्यकृतींमध्ये निर्माण झालेली विश्वं - माणसं, निसर्ग, घटनास्थळं, सांस्कृतिक पार्श्वभूमी -- हे सर्व एकमेकांपासून बव्हंशी निराळं आहे.
काफ्काच्या कथा-कादंबऱ्यांचे नायक / त्यांतील प्रमुख पात्रं हे जास्त करून सुशिक्षित, नोकरी करणारे, शहरात राहणारे पुरुष आहेत जे आपली अस्मिता गमावून, अभेद्य अशा आधुनिक युगाच्या यंत्रणा व व्यवस्थांमध्ये केवळ एक फाईल - एक धारिका होऊन राहिले आहेत. नोकरी करून आपल्या ऐहिक गरजा कशाबशा भागवून शहरात जगणाऱ्या माणसाला प्रकर्षाने जाणवणारं हे निखालस एकाकीपण आणि परकेपण, हे यूरोपमध्ये विसाव्या शतकाच्या पूर्वार्धात प्रचंड राजकीय, आर्थिक व सामाजिक उलथापालथीच्या, हिंसाचाराच्या आणि अराजकतेच्या काळातील जीवनाचं एक व्यवच्छेदक लक्षण आहे. आणि हे परकेपण काफ्काच्या नायकांच्या जीवनाचंही एक महत्वाचं लक्षण आहे.
जी एंचं कथालेखन हे साधारणपणे १९५० च्या नंतरचं. स्वातंत्र्योत्तर काळात एकीकडे प्रगतीची आस व संभावना तर दुसरीकडे देशभर पसरलेली गरिबी, दुरवस्था, जात-पात आणि निरक्षरता. ह्या सामाजिक-ऐतिहासिक पार्श्वभूमीवरील जी एं च्या बहुतांश कथांचे नायक म्हणजे निरक्षर, खेडवळ गावकरी किंवा जेमतेम शिक्षण झालेली गावात अथवा छोट्या शहरात राहणारी, कसाबसा उदरनिर्वाह करणारी माणसं. इथेही एकाकीपणाची आणि परकेपणाची अंतःस्थ जाणीव आहे, परंतु तिचा उगम ज्याला आपण crisis of modernity म्हणतो त्या पाश्चात्य आधुनिकतेनी स्वतःवर ओढवून घेतलेल्या कोंडी वा संकटातून झालेला नाही, तसेच तिची अभिव्यक्ती अशा crisis of modernity च्या प्रभावाखाली झालेली आहे असंही म्हणता येत नाही.
तर जी एं च्या आणि काफ्काच्या कथाविश्वांतील हे फरक हे ह्या दोन साहित्यिकांनी त्यांच्या जीवनविषयक तत्त्वज्ञानाच्या व विश्व-संकल्पनेच्या अभिव्यक्तीसाठी ''वापरलेल्या" संस्कृती-विशिष्ट भाषा, रूपके व प्रतिमा यांचे प्रमाणभूत आहेत. हे मूलभूत फरक आहेत असे म्हणता येणार नाही अशा आशयाचं प्रतिपादक विधान प्रस्तुत प्रबंधात केलेलं आहे. मुळात अस्तित्ववादी अशी त्यांची विश्व-संकल्पना त्यांची रूपके दर्शवतात. दोन्ही लेखकांचा अस्तित्ववाद काही सामायिक तत्वांमध्ये प्रकट होतो: स्वकेंद्रित, टीकारहित विचार आणि आचारांबाबत अविरत प्रश्न विचारत राहणे, माणसाच्या नातेसंबंधांचे संस्थाकरण नाकारणे, मग ते नातेसंबंध इतर मानवांशी असोत किंवा परमात्म्याशी. दोन्ही लेखकांच्या जागी ही सतत प्रश्न करण्याची प्रक्रिया म्हणजेच सत्याचा अविरत चाललेला शोध. मात्र ते सत्य मला सापडलं आहे आणि ते मी तुला दाखवू शकतो असा "फॅसिस्ट" दावा, असा खोटेपणा, दांभिकपणा त्यांच्या लेखनात आढळत नाही. हा ह्या दोन्ही कथाविश्वांना जोडणारा एक महत्वाचा धागा आहे.
अजून एक धागा म्हणजे -- जी एं च्या आणि काफ्काच्या कित्येक समीक्षकांच्या भाषेतच सांगायचं झालं तर -- ह्या दोन्ही कथाविश्वांमध्ये मानवी असमर्थता आणि अपयश यांचं वारंवार झालेलं चित्रण. त्यामुळे साधारणपणे वाचकवर्गाचा आणि समीक्षकांचा ढोबळ समज असा आहे की हे दोघेही निराशावादी लेखक आहेत, निराशावादाच्या व नाकारात्मकतेच्या "भोवऱ्यात अडकलेले प्रतिभावंत" आहेत. वाङमयीन कलाकृतीतील पात्रं म्हणजे ती निर्माण करणारा कलाकार नव्हे, हा प्राथमिक फरकही न करता काही वाचक व समीक्षक तर जी ए आणि काफ्का ह्या व्यक्तींनाच निराशावादी, प्रतिगामी, शून्यवादी किंवा मानसिक दृष्ट्या दुर्बल व एकांगी ठरवून मोकळे होतात.
तर अशा ह्या तथाकथित निराशावादी लेखकांच्या कथा एका वेगळ्या दृष्टिकोनातून वाचण्याचा प्रयत्न इथे केलेला आहे. हा दृष्टिकोन hermeneutic-comparative आहे असे म्हणता येईल. Comparative ह्या शब्दाचा अर्थ इथे तुलनात्मक-समांतर असा अभिप्रेत आहे, तर Hermeneutics ह्या संकल्पनेची व्याख्या -- एखाद्या कलाकृतीचा किंवा पाठाचा अर्थ लावण्याची कला -- अशी. ही कला वाचकाची. कला म्हटली की त्यात वैविध्य आलंच. म्हणजे एका कलाकृतीचे किंवा (काव्यात्मक) पाठाचे अनेक अर्थ असू शकतात ही hermeneutic वाचन पद्धतीची एक मूळ धारणा आहे, कारण ह्या वाचनपद्धतीत अर्थ लावण्याच्या प्रक्रियेत वाचणारा, अर्थ लावणारा "मी" पूर्णपणे समाविष्ट असतो. शुद्ध वस्तुनिष्ठता एक मिथक ठरते. परंतु त्याचबरोबर ज्या कलाकृतीचा आपण अर्थ लावत आहोत त्या कलाकृतीबद्दलच्या उपलब्ध असलेल्या सर्व वस्तुनिष्ठ माहितिचा आढावा घेणे अपरिहार्य असते.
असा एक दृष्टिकोन जो सुरुवातीलाच कुठल्याही प्रकारच्या अंतिमत्वाची कल्पना दूर ठेवतो, अंतिम गंतव्याची व आगमनाची शक्यता तत्वतः मानतो पण त्या आशेच्या आहारी जाणं टाळतो -- अशा दृष्टिकोनातून पाहिल्यास मानवी असमर्थता आणि अपयश यांचं ह्या कथांत वारंवार झालेलं चित्रण हे दोन संवेदनशील विचारवंत-कलाकारांनी स्वतःला जाणून घेण्यासाठी केलेला, सदसद्विवेकबुद्धीवर व तडजोडरहित, निर्भीड स्वटीकेवर आधारित असलेला प्रयास आहे असे म्हणता येईल. स्वतःला जाणून घेणं म्हणजे अंतर्बाह्य जाणून घेणं -- जी सृष्टी, जे जग बाहेर दिसतं तेच स्वतःच्या अंतरंगातही जाणवतं. कथालेखन, आणि त्या अनुषंगाने कथावाचनही, विरंगुळ्याचं साधन न राहता आत्मच्या अध्ययनाचं म्हणजे अध्यात्माचं एक रूप होऊन जातं. अंतरमन, बाहेरील जग आणि हे सर्व पाहणारा मी -- ही "त्रिपुटी" सांडते व द्रष्ट्या मानवाची दृष्टी आत वळून अंतर्मुख होते. बाहेरच्या जगातील कोलाहल वेगळा आणि माझं अंतरमन वेगळं हे द्वैत जी एं च्या आणि काफ्काच्या कथांमध्ये आणि त्या कथा वाचणाऱ्या वाचकाच्या मनात उद्ध्वस्त होऊन जातं.
बाहेरच्या जगात ह्या लेखकांना जी अमानवीय अराजकता दिसते तीच अराजकता, तोच कोलाहल त्यांना पूर्णतः स्वकेंद्रित परंतु स्वतःकडे टीकादृष्टीने कधीही न पाहणाऱ्या मनुष्याच्या अंतरममनातही आढळतात. स्वार्थाने आंधळा झालेला हा "मी" स्वतःच्या आत डोकावूनही न बघता स्वतःला चिरस्थायी करू पाहत आहे. ह्या "स्व" चा हा अविवेकी उन्मादच त्याचं पातक, त्याचा गुन्हा आहे. शतकानुशतके न शोधलेला आणि न सापडलेला असा त्याच्या दोषीपणाचा, अपराधीपणाचा स्रोत, ज्याचे रूपकात्मक ओझरते दर्शन काफ्काच्या "महाभियोग" (The Trial) आणि जी एं च्या "इस्किलार" मध्ये वाचकाला होते.
ही रूपके म्हणजे एका आत्म-समालोचनी मनाची ध्यानात्मक अभिव्यक्ती आहे, ज्याची एकमेव प्रेरणा म्हणजे सतत नव्याने स्वतःचा शोध घेण्याची शक्यता. जसा दोन सर्जनशील मनांनी खेळलेला एकट्याचा डाव, जो एक प्रकारच्या वैराग्याकडे घेऊन जातो. परंतु हे वैराग्य वेगळं आहे. ह्यात एकाकीपणा नसून एकांतवास आहे. जाणूनबुजून केलेला पण जबरदस्तीरहित असा जीवनाच्या संपूर्णतेचा स्वीकार आहे. म्हणजे जीवनाच्या शक्यतेबरोबरच मृत्यूच्या अपरिहार्यतेचा, जीवन आणि मृत्यू यांच्या एकतेचा पूर्ण स्वीकार.
काफ्काचा उपोषक कलाकार (Hunger Artist) व जी एं च्या "कांचनमृग" या कथेतील व्याध यांच्या "वैराग्याचा" असा अर्थ लावता येईल -- वरवर पाहिलं तर ते जीवन नाकारत आहेत असं वाटेल. पण जरा खोलात पाहिलं तर असं दिसेल की ही दोन्ही पात्रं म्हणजे आपल्या "स्व" च्या कधी न संपणाऱ्या शोधात निघालेल्या मनुष्याची रूपके आहेत. ह्या शोधात मृत्यू देखील केवळ एक "स्टेशन" मात्र आहे, मधला थांबा, अंतिम स्थानक नव्हे!
कथानकाच्या ओघात ही पात्रं त्यांच्या निर्मात्यांचीही रूपके होतात. जीवनाबद्दल लिहिण्याची प्रक्रिया आणि जीवन हे द्वैत नष्ट होतं. आणि त्याचप्रमाणे सहृदयी, सहभागी वाचनाची प्रक्रिया व वाचकाचं जीवन हे द्वैतही नष्ट करण्याचं सामर्थ्य जी ए व काफ्का दोघांच्या कथालेखनात खचितच आहे. कथेचा निवेदक, कथेतील पात्रं आणि सहृदयी सहभागी वाचक हे कथेत एकमेकांना भेटतात, क्षणभर ओळखतात आणि अलग होतात, एकमेकांना पुन्हा भेटण्यासाठी -- कुठेतरी, दुसरीकडे, पण त्याच एका जीवनाच्या कथेत.
काफ्का व जी ए यांच्या कथासाहित्याची तुलना दोघांपैकी श्रेष्ठ कोण हे ठरवण्यासाठी निश्चितच केलेली नाही. तुलनात्मक अभ्यासाचा आणखी एक निकष म्हणजे "प्रभाव": जी एंच्या कथालेखनावर काफ्काचा प्रभाव आहे का? अप्रत्यक्ष प्रभाव असूही शकेल -- जी एंनी काफ्काचं साहित्य वाचलं होतं, आणि त्यांच्या पत्रव्यवहारातून असं दिसतं की ते त्यांना आवडायचंही. परंतु ह्या ठिकाणी दोघांच्या कथालेखनाला स्वतंत्र कलाकृती मानून अभ्यास केलेला आहे. दोघा साहित्यिकांच्या ऐतिहासिक-सामाजिक पार्श्वभूमीचा, तसेच त्यांच्यावर झालेल्या १९९५-९६ पर्यंतच्या समीक्षात्मक लेखनाचा आढावा घेऊन त्यानंतर "इस्किलार" व "कांचनमृग", तसेच "The Trial" व "A Hunger Artist" ह्या कथांचं विश्लेषण सादर केलेलं आहे.
वरील विवेचनाचा समारोप करताना अखेर तुलनात्मक साहित्याभ्यास आणि जी ए व काफ्का यांच्या एका विशिष्ट "अस्तित्ववादी" तत्वज्ञान व विश्व-संकल्पनेबद्दल खालील मुद्दे मांडता येतील:
१. तुलनात्मक साहित्याभ्यासाचा वापर सांस्कृतिक वरचढपणा किंवा श्रेष्ठता-दुय्यमता शाबीत करण्याकरता होऊ नये.
२. निरंतर टीकात्मक आत्मचिंतनाची अनिवार्यता; व
३. स्वखुशीने स्वीकारलेलं वैराग्य म्हणजे जीवनाला नाकारणं नव्हे. उलट त्याचा अर्थ जीवनाच्या संपूर्णतेचा जास्त खोलवर जाऊन केलेला स्वीकार असाही असू शकतो. अशा पातळीवर की जिथे साऱ्या मानवी जीवनाच्या एका सामायिक मूलत्वाला आपण स्पर्श करू शकतो, कलेच्या रसास्वादात ते अनुभवू शकतो. ज्या ठिकाणी मनुष्य कोत्या स्वार्थापासून व सत्तालालसेपासून मुक्त असतो कारण त्याची नैतिकता जागरूक झालेली असते.
जी. ए. कुलकर्णी व फ्रान्झ काफ्का यांच्या कथा साहित्यातली मानवाच्या अंतरंगाचे विचक्षण
दर्शन घडवणारी रूपकात्मकता - एक तुलनात्मक अभ्यास
हे माझ्या पी एच डी प्रबंधाचे शीर्षक.१९९७ साली मूळ जर्मन भाषेत लिहिलेला हा प्रबंध जवाहरलाल नेहरू विश्वविद्यालयाच्या सेंटर ऑफ जर्मन स्टडीज विभागामध्ये सादर केला गेला व स्वीकृत करण्यात आला. हा प्रबंध लिहिताना मला जे एन यू च्या सेंटर ऑफ जर्मन स्टडीज चे प्रोफेसर राजेंद्र डेंगळे यांचे अनमोल मार्गदर्शन लाभले. ह्या प्रबंधाचा मराठीत सारांश लिहायचा हा प्रयत्न.
फ्रान्झ काफ्काच्या कथासाहित्यावरील एका अतिशय प्रबोधकारी अशा लेखाच्या अगदी सुरुवातीलाच ऑस्ट्रियन समीक्षक व विचारवंत एर्न्स्ट फिशर एक मजेदार किस्सा सांगतात.
काफ्काचा मित्र माक्स ब्रोड याने प्राग मधल्या आपल्या कवी-लेखक-समीक्षक मित्र मंडळींना काफ्काच्या काही कथा पहिल्यांदा वाचून ऐकवल्या तेव्हा त्या काळचे प्रसिद्ध कवी व नाटककार फ्रान्झ वेर्फेल म्हणाले होते: टेटचेन-बोडेनबाखच्या पलीकडे राहणाऱ्या कुणालाही काफ्का कधी कळणार नाही. म्हणजे ज्या शहराशी काफ्का जोडला गेलेला आहे त्या प्राग शहराच्या साधारण शंभर मैलांपलीकडे त्याचं लिखाण कुणाला कळणारच नाही!
हे झालं एक "सत्य". त्याच्या बरोबर विरोधात उभं ठाकलेलं दुसरं "सत्य" म्हणजे गेल्या जवळजवळ शतकाभरात काफ्काच्या कथा आणि कादंबऱ्यांना जगभर मिळालेला प्रतिसाद!! काफ्का लोकांना किती कळतो, किती कळला ही गोष्ट तशी वादातीतच. किंबहुना एका वाचनात पूर्ण कधी कळलासा वाटत नाही, आणि म्हणूनच वाचक त्याच्या कथा आणि कादंबऱ्या पुन्हा पुन्हा वाचतात. १८८३ ते १९२४ या काळात प्राग मध्ये, म्हणजे ऑस्ट्रियन साम्राज्यांतर्गत चेक भाषी प्रदेशामध्ये राहणाऱ्या एका जर्मन भाषी ज्यू परिवारात वाढलेल्या, वकील होऊन सरकारी नोकरी करणाऱ्या काफ्काशी सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक दृष्टीने, इतिहास-भूगोलाने पूर्णपणे अगदी अनिगडीत असे वाचकही ही आवर्तने करत राहतात.
अशा ह्या लेखकाच्या साहित्याचं आणि जी ए कुलकर्णी यांच्या कथासाहित्याचं समांतर तुलनात्मक वाचन करण्याचा प्रयत्न करण्याचं हे शिवधनुष्य मी उचललं. १९२३ ते १९८७ हा जी एंचा जीवनकाळ. इंग्रजी साहित्याचे प्रोफेसर, कथाकार, अनुवादक आणि -- त्यांच्या पत्रव्यवहारातून दिसून येतं त्याप्रमाणे -- एक अतिशय संवेदनशील असे समीक्षक.
जी ए आणि काफ्का ह्या दोन कथाविश्वांतून केलेल्या ह्या प्रवासाचा प्रस्थान-बिंदू म्हणजे दोघांच्या कथा वाचताना जाणवलेली आशयाधिष्ठित वा thematic जवळीक आणि वाचकाच्या मनात प्रकट होणारी प्रतिक्रिया, किंवा प्रतिसाद. ऐतिहासिक काळ व सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक पार्श्वभूमीच्या दृष्टीने ह्या दोन्ही साहित्यिक कृती अगदी भिन्न आहेत. काफ्काच्या बाबतीत आपण दुहेरी दूरत्व म्हणजेच भाषिक व सामाजिक परकेपणाबद्दल बोलू शकतो: चेक भाषिक प्रदेशात राहणारा जर्मन भाषी; आणि ऑस्ट्रियन-जर्मन साम्राज्यात सरकारी नोकरी करणारा ज्यू / यहुदी. असा भाषिक व सामाजिक परकेपणा जी एं ना जीवनात तेवढ्या तीव्रतेने सहन करावा लागला नसावा. आणि तरीही दोन्ही साहित्यकृतींमधील thematic नातं व जवळीक अगदी पहिल्या वाचनात सुद्धा ठळकपणे जाणवतात:
मानवाचा त्याच्या गंतव्य स्थळी पोहोचण्याचा, "आगमनाचा" सतत केलेला आणि सतत असफल होणारा प्रयत्न; आपल्या अस्तित्वाबाबतचं, आपल्या असण्याबाबतचं पूर्ण ज्ञान प्राप्त करून घेऊन जे गूढ व अनाकलनीय आहे, ज्या भयानं -- मृत्यूच्या भयानं -- मानवी मन पछाडलेलं आहे, त्या भयापासून 'कायमचं' मुक्त होण्याचा मानवाचा अविरत विफल प्रयास -- हे सारे काही दोन्ही ठिकाणी प्रत्ययाला येते.
विवेक, बुद्धी, शारीरिक ताकद यांच्या बळावर आपल्या भाग्याला, नियतीला आपल्या नियंत्रणाखाली आणू शकण्याचा आत्मविश्वास बाळगून राहिलेल्या मनुष्य प्राण्याने त्या दिशेनं उचललेलं प्रत्येक पाऊल त्याला त्याच्या उद्देशापासून दूरच घेऊन जातं -- हा मानवी जीवनाचा मूलभूत विरोधाभास दोन्हीकडे समान प्रमाणात पाहायला मिळतो.
ज्याप्रमाणे दोन्ही लेखकांचा जीवनकाळ व ऐतिहासिक-सांस्कृतिक परिस्थिती एकमेकांपासून भिन्न आहेत, त्याचप्रमाणे ह्या दोन्ही साहित्यकृतींमध्ये निर्माण झालेली विश्वं - माणसं, निसर्ग, घटनास्थळं, सांस्कृतिक पार्श्वभूमी -- हे सर्व एकमेकांपासून बव्हंशी निराळं आहे.
काफ्काच्या कथा-कादंबऱ्यांचे नायक / त्यांतील प्रमुख पात्रं हे जास्त करून सुशिक्षित, नोकरी करणारे, शहरात राहणारे पुरुष आहेत जे आपली अस्मिता गमावून, अभेद्य अशा आधुनिक युगाच्या यंत्रणा व व्यवस्थांमध्ये केवळ एक फाईल - एक धारिका होऊन राहिले आहेत. नोकरी करून आपल्या ऐहिक गरजा कशाबशा भागवून शहरात जगणाऱ्या माणसाला प्रकर्षाने जाणवणारं हे निखालस एकाकीपण आणि परकेपण, हे यूरोपमध्ये विसाव्या शतकाच्या पूर्वार्धात प्रचंड राजकीय, आर्थिक व सामाजिक उलथापालथीच्या, हिंसाचाराच्या आणि अराजकतेच्या काळातील जीवनाचं एक व्यवच्छेदक लक्षण आहे. आणि हे परकेपण काफ्काच्या नायकांच्या जीवनाचंही एक महत्वाचं लक्षण आहे.
जी एंचं कथालेखन हे साधारणपणे १९५० च्या नंतरचं. स्वातंत्र्योत्तर काळात एकीकडे प्रगतीची आस व संभावना तर दुसरीकडे देशभर पसरलेली गरिबी, दुरवस्था, जात-पात आणि निरक्षरता. ह्या सामाजिक-ऐतिहासिक पार्श्वभूमीवरील जी एं च्या बहुतांश कथांचे नायक म्हणजे निरक्षर, खेडवळ गावकरी किंवा जेमतेम शिक्षण झालेली गावात अथवा छोट्या शहरात राहणारी, कसाबसा उदरनिर्वाह करणारी माणसं. इथेही एकाकीपणाची आणि परकेपणाची अंतःस्थ जाणीव आहे, परंतु तिचा उगम ज्याला आपण crisis of modernity म्हणतो त्या पाश्चात्य आधुनिकतेनी स्वतःवर ओढवून घेतलेल्या कोंडी वा संकटातून झालेला नाही, तसेच तिची अभिव्यक्ती अशा crisis of modernity च्या प्रभावाखाली झालेली आहे असंही म्हणता येत नाही.
तर जी एं च्या आणि काफ्काच्या कथाविश्वांतील हे फरक हे ह्या दोन साहित्यिकांनी त्यांच्या जीवनविषयक तत्त्वज्ञानाच्या व विश्व-संकल्पनेच्या अभिव्यक्तीसाठी ''वापरलेल्या" संस्कृती-विशिष्ट भाषा, रूपके व प्रतिमा यांचे प्रमाणभूत आहेत. हे मूलभूत फरक आहेत असे म्हणता येणार नाही अशा आशयाचं प्रतिपादक विधान प्रस्तुत प्रबंधात केलेलं आहे. मुळात अस्तित्ववादी अशी त्यांची विश्व-संकल्पना त्यांची रूपके दर्शवतात. दोन्ही लेखकांचा अस्तित्ववाद काही सामायिक तत्वांमध्ये प्रकट होतो: स्वकेंद्रित, टीकारहित विचार आणि आचारांबाबत अविरत प्रश्न विचारत राहणे, माणसाच्या नातेसंबंधांचे संस्थाकरण नाकारणे, मग ते नातेसंबंध इतर मानवांशी असोत किंवा परमात्म्याशी. दोन्ही लेखकांच्या जागी ही सतत प्रश्न करण्याची प्रक्रिया म्हणजेच सत्याचा अविरत चाललेला शोध. मात्र ते सत्य मला सापडलं आहे आणि ते मी तुला दाखवू शकतो असा "फॅसिस्ट" दावा, असा खोटेपणा, दांभिकपणा त्यांच्या लेखनात आढळत नाही. हा ह्या दोन्ही कथाविश्वांना जोडणारा एक महत्वाचा धागा आहे.
अजून एक धागा म्हणजे -- जी एं च्या आणि काफ्काच्या कित्येक समीक्षकांच्या भाषेतच सांगायचं झालं तर -- ह्या दोन्ही कथाविश्वांमध्ये मानवी असमर्थता आणि अपयश यांचं वारंवार झालेलं चित्रण. त्यामुळे साधारणपणे वाचकवर्गाचा आणि समीक्षकांचा ढोबळ समज असा आहे की हे दोघेही निराशावादी लेखक आहेत, निराशावादाच्या व नाकारात्मकतेच्या "भोवऱ्यात अडकलेले प्रतिभावंत" आहेत. वाङमयीन कलाकृतीतील पात्रं म्हणजे ती निर्माण करणारा कलाकार नव्हे, हा प्राथमिक फरकही न करता काही वाचक व समीक्षक तर जी ए आणि काफ्का ह्या व्यक्तींनाच निराशावादी, प्रतिगामी, शून्यवादी किंवा मानसिक दृष्ट्या दुर्बल व एकांगी ठरवून मोकळे होतात.
तर अशा ह्या तथाकथित निराशावादी लेखकांच्या कथा एका वेगळ्या दृष्टिकोनातून वाचण्याचा प्रयत्न इथे केलेला आहे. हा दृष्टिकोन hermeneutic-comparative आहे असे म्हणता येईल. Comparative ह्या शब्दाचा अर्थ इथे तुलनात्मक-समांतर असा अभिप्रेत आहे, तर Hermeneutics ह्या संकल्पनेची व्याख्या -- एखाद्या कलाकृतीचा किंवा पाठाचा अर्थ लावण्याची कला -- अशी. ही कला वाचकाची. कला म्हटली की त्यात वैविध्य आलंच. म्हणजे एका कलाकृतीचे किंवा (काव्यात्मक) पाठाचे अनेक अर्थ असू शकतात ही hermeneutic वाचन पद्धतीची एक मूळ धारणा आहे, कारण ह्या वाचनपद्धतीत अर्थ लावण्याच्या प्रक्रियेत वाचणारा, अर्थ लावणारा "मी" पूर्णपणे समाविष्ट असतो. शुद्ध वस्तुनिष्ठता एक मिथक ठरते. परंतु त्याचबरोबर ज्या कलाकृतीचा आपण अर्थ लावत आहोत त्या कलाकृतीबद्दलच्या उपलब्ध असलेल्या सर्व वस्तुनिष्ठ माहितिचा आढावा घेणे अपरिहार्य असते.

कथानकाच्या ओघात ही पात्रं त्यांच्या निर्मात्यांचीही रूपके होतात. जीवनाबद्दल लिहिण्याची प्रक्रिया आणि जीवन हे द्वैत नष्ट होतं. आणि त्याचप्रमाणे सहृदयी, सहभागी वाचनाची प्रक्रिया व वाचकाचं जीवन हे द्वैतही नष्ट करण्याचं सामर्थ्य जी ए व काफ्का दोघांच्या कथालेखनात खचितच आहे. कथेचा निवेदक, कथेतील पात्रं आणि सहृदयी सहभागी वाचक हे कथेत एकमेकांना भेटतात, क्षणभर ओळखतात आणि अलग होतात, एकमेकांना पुन्हा भेटण्यासाठी -- कुठेतरी, दुसरीकडे, पण त्याच एका जीवनाच्या कथेत.
काफ्का व जी ए यांच्या कथासाहित्याची तुलना दोघांपैकी श्रेष्ठ कोण हे ठरवण्यासाठी निश्चितच केलेली नाही. तुलनात्मक अभ्यासाचा आणखी एक निकष म्हणजे "प्रभाव": जी एंच्या कथालेखनावर काफ्काचा प्रभाव आहे का? अप्रत्यक्ष प्रभाव असूही शकेल -- जी एंनी काफ्काचं साहित्य वाचलं होतं, आणि त्यांच्या पत्रव्यवहारातून असं दिसतं की ते त्यांना आवडायचंही. परंतु ह्या ठिकाणी दोघांच्या कथालेखनाला स्वतंत्र कलाकृती मानून अभ्यास केलेला आहे. दोघा साहित्यिकांच्या ऐतिहासिक-सामाजिक पार्श्वभूमीचा, तसेच त्यांच्यावर झालेल्या १९९५-९६ पर्यंतच्या समीक्षात्मक लेखनाचा आढावा घेऊन त्यानंतर "इस्किलार" व "कांचनमृग", तसेच "The Trial" व "A Hunger Artist" ह्या कथांचं विश्लेषण सादर केलेलं आहे.
वरील विवेचनाचा समारोप करताना अखेर तुलनात्मक साहित्याभ्यास आणि जी ए व काफ्का यांच्या एका विशिष्ट "अस्तित्ववादी" तत्वज्ञान व विश्व-संकल्पनेबद्दल खालील मुद्दे मांडता येतील:
१. तुलनात्मक साहित्याभ्यासाचा वापर सांस्कृतिक वरचढपणा किंवा श्रेष्ठता-दुय्यमता शाबीत करण्याकरता होऊ नये.
२. निरंतर टीकात्मक आत्मचिंतनाची अनिवार्यता; व
३. स्वखुशीने स्वीकारलेलं वैराग्य म्हणजे जीवनाला नाकारणं नव्हे. उलट त्याचा अर्थ जीवनाच्या संपूर्णतेचा जास्त खोलवर जाऊन केलेला स्वीकार असाही असू शकतो. अशा पातळीवर की जिथे साऱ्या मानवी जीवनाच्या एका सामायिक मूलत्वाला आपण स्पर्श करू शकतो, कलेच्या रसास्वादात ते अनुभवू शकतो. ज्या ठिकाणी मनुष्य कोत्या स्वार्थापासून व सत्तालालसेपासून मुक्त असतो कारण त्याची नैतिकता जागरूक झालेली असते.
After his postgraduate degree programme in German Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi he completed his doctorate in 1997 focussing on Franz Kafka's works and their possible influence on the Indian writer G.A. Kukarni who wrote in Marathi.

My own private Kafka
It was in the 1980s that I encountered Franz Kafka’s writings (including his wearisome letters) at the Mumbai University library. When I should have been paying attention to the Elizabethans, I was gobbling up all of his literary work that was housed in the library. The best thing that I did. Then I used to wander around the university and catch hold of victims and unleash my version of stories in which I ambitiously and unsuccessfully tried to be Kafka.
Since then, I bumped into him thrice.
Firstly, with Prof. Vilas Sarang who taught us James Joyce's "Ulysses” at the university. The 783-page gem which chronicles a single day in Dublin was the least-read book on the course. The English lectures in the summer months would be conducted in slow motion. Sarang would scribble "snot green sea" on the blackboard. Long silence. Sarang would smile. Long silence. Sarang would talk about Joyce's use of water as a metaphor. Longer silence. Nothing would happen in class. All of us, staring at the professor. And he, staring out of the window. Some more silence. It was a tour de force on how one must not deliver a lecture.The rumour was: Sarang was insomniac.
I loved this lecture; especially the incomparable silence. I took a vow that if I ever became a professor, this is how I would deliver my talks: 60 minutes of silence.
I met him in his cabin a few times. Lots of Rudyard Kipling adorned the wall panels and a solitary tribute to Kafka.
Everyone is Gregor Samsa, he said.
Long silence.
In the story, Gregor Samsa wakes up as a beetle.
Longer silence.
Nabokov, who knew about beetles, said those who translated or depicted the insectified hero as a cockroach were eeeediots!
Even longer silence.
Then he chuckled and then he spoke. The number of Gregor Samsas in India will surge by 69%, with more than 19,000 Gregor Samsas boasting an ultra-high net worth of Samsa-ness.
Then Sarang mapped the various types of Gregor Samsas. It could start with the "subjugation" phase, followed by "the start of Samsa-ness," "the show-offy Gregor Samsa," "the one who wants to belong," and ultimately, "Gregor Samsa, as a way of life."
Companies across the globe will start manufacturing products for today's Gregor Samsas. Everyone will aspire to be a Gregor Samsa; and Gregor Samsa will be a luxury brand. With growing awareness, citizens will have a Samsa passport and seek to stand out through even more exclusive Samsa-ness to differentiate themselves in our already brand-conscious social circle.
It was a masterclass by Prof. Sarang. Nothing matched it, ever. What he was trying to tell all us impressionable minds was this: Kafka was not only a magic realist. But when one reads Kafka, you certainly must think you're reading about what the world is really like.
I bumped into Kafka again and again.
I saw a NSD play production based on ”The Trial”.In their attempt to be Kafkaesque, the actors totally missed the point.
I saw a play production based on ”The Trial”. Again, it missed the point.They made K. a symbol of the contemptible status of a victimised minority in today's time.
Likewise, when a production of Kafka's ”The Castle” morphed into a Christopher Nolan version of Dante’s Hell.
That which was simple, was reimagined into incomprehensible gobbledygook.
“The Trial” (or rather its premise) is so, so simple.Consider this bit:
T: Are you innocent?
K: Yes. I'm completely innocent.
T: I see.
T: If you are innocent, then the matter is quite simple.
K: My innocence doesn't make the matter any simpler.
K: I've to fight against countless subtleties in which the Court is likely to lose itself.
Later I saw Uday Chandra render ”The Metamorphosis” at the Prithvi House (it was not complete yet; and so in a way, it was metamorphosing too). This was my second encounter with Kafka.
Uday on stage made one realise why we still care about Kafka; and why his works strike so deep.
Uday on stage provided an interesting and valuable sociological insight into all of us as non-human primates.
It was an out-of-sync presentation and a version of Kafka’s "Metamorphosis" which mirrored Uday's own life of strife. It was haunting: it was inscrutable (like Uday), beneath the text were the bizarre obstacles that Uday encountered, and a sense of alienation reminiscent.
Uday Chandra's Gregor Samsa is not merely confined to his room; he is confined in his body. And the inconvenience of his new beetle-ish body helps him explore the three dimensions, even walking isa chore, the walls are a prison. In his physical transformation, we gain a new perspective...
Stirring stuff; and theatre minimalism at its best.
My third encounter with Kafka was when I came across a seminal essay on Kafka penned by the British playwright, Alan Bennett. It is called ”Kafka at Las Vegas”.
The essay is superb. Like a lot of Alan Bennett’s output it mixes heaps of comedy with witty displays of learning and some moments of genuine tenderness.
I used to record the essay on a dictaphone; and inflict it on anyone who dared to open their mouth about Kafka. That's approx 45 minutes in length and a reading, in my drone-like voice.
My favourite bit of Bennettian wit is when he says the Kafka household could have been the setting for many Jewish jokes:
Father: Son, you hate me.
Son: Father, I love you.
Mother: Don’t contradict your father.
Later I read Bennett's play “Kafka's Dick”. It was awesome, quite terrific. Also it helps if you know your Kafka and Max Brod. Then there is “Insurance Man" which had Daniel Day-Lewis play Kafka. Again Alan Bennett.
What shines through for me is that Franz Kafka was not a "petty clerk" in a Gogolian office. Kafka was an executive at an insurance firm, and his legal knowledge about labour insurance issues was in-depth. To quote the child of the Austro-Hungarian empire (Czechoslovakia was not born as yet), Kafka is Kafka because he possessed "the passion of the scientist, and the precision of the artist". And the other thing is, how Kakfa treated corpses, or bodies destined for death. He did so with contempt, and that’s how it should be.
