Charles Correa: Un-Built Works

Exhibition: Charles Correa in Mumbai 3 © Goethe-Institut Mumbai / Amruta Nemivant

An incredible treasure trove of Charles Correa's unrealised projects occupies a large part of his archives and is lesser known. Through carefully curated content from his archives, this exhibition aims to present the content of his unrealised work with the intention of bringing the significance of the ideas to light.

Curators’ Note
Charles Correa’s built projects are recognized for their ingenuity and conceptual clarity. However, a collection of his un-built work: competition entries, commissions and public projects, are rich repositories of his ideas and occupy a significant portion of his oeuvre. This un-built work, though less well-known, contributed significantly to the clarity of his thought and design. Here we see the seminal idea intact, unhindered by the pragmatic force of the building process. This exhibition highlights these un-built projects, through the drawings and sketches of Correa’s archive.

The intent of this exhibition is to present the body of his un-built projects in a way that illuminates important continuities in his thought, bringing into focus key lineages, while keeping his prolific career in the background of the narrative. Within a broader timeline of his work and career, we position the un-built projects that are crucial milestones in the development and articulation of his concerns and issues right from housing to planning, and culture to politics.
