Goethe-Institut presents Science Film Festival 2024 on the topic NET ZERO and the CIRCULAR ECONOMY

The Science Film Festival 2024 will center on the theme of Net Zero and the Circular Economy, emphasizing the urgent need for actions beyond solely reducing global greenhouse gas emissions to address climate protection effectively. Recent research findings underscore that focusing solely on cutting CO2 emissions is insufficient to halt climate change. To meet the Paris Climate Agreement objectives, a swift transition to achieving net zero emissions is imperative. Yet, this ambitious goal demands significant changes that cannot be achieved overnight. Maintaining any level of net CO2 emissions above zero will perpetuate the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. Net zero concepts aim to counterbalance carbon dioxide production by actively removing it from the atmosphere.
 
Integral to this pursuit is the concept of a circular economy, which prioritizes the sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, and recycling of existing materials and products for as long as feasible. By promoting the reuse and recycling of products, the circular economy effectively slows the depletion of natural resources, curtails landscape and habitat destruction, and aids in preserving biodiversity. On the occasion of its 20th Anniversary, the Science Film Festival endeavors to spotlight films from around the world highlighting the crucial role played by net zero concepts and the circular economy in combatting the challenges posed by the climate crises.

This year, we’re excited to introduce a new format for our festival, offering both long-term and short-term sessions.
 
Short-Term Session: The festival mentors (Ms. Yoshida Menon and Preveena Nandakumar ) will screen specially selected films and conduct engaging, hands-on activities centered around the themes of Net Zero and the Circular Economy at the Goethe-Institut auditorium or your school.  

Ms. Yoshida Menon and Ms. Preveena Nandakumar bring in their unique strengths to curate and implement educational initiatives in learning spaces that focus on sustainability and science communication. Through their learning platform SCI-PY, the duo conduct curiosity-based workshops that focus on inter-disciplinary learning and hands-on exploration. They have curated and delivered a variety of workshops for many organisations based both in India and abroad.

Target Audience: These sessions are designed for Primary Level Students (Age 9-11 years OR 5th to 8th Std.) making complex concepts fun and accessible while encouraging them to think about sustainability from a young age.

Long Term Session:
Our festival mentors will visit your school to screen specially selected films and conduct engaging, hands-on activities centered around the themes of Net Zero and the Circular Economy. After these sessions, each school will be required to select 5 students to participate in a Skill Development Workshop, which will be conducted by various partners and curated by our festival mentors.

Target Audience: These sessions are designed for Secondary Level Students (Age 12 to 16 or 9th to 12th Std.)  making complex concepts engaging and relatable while encouraging them to think critically about sustainability and its impact on their future.

The Skill Development Workshop is scheduled for 15th November 2024, at the Goethe-Institut Auditorium from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. After participating in the Skill Development Workshop, students will have sufficient time to develop a school/community project based on the theme of Net Zero and the Circular Economy. These projects will be showcased at the Goethe-Institut on 13th December 2024, where all participating schools will come together to present the final results of their students' efforts.
