This lecture-demonstration and listening session presents a historical journey through electronic music’s evolution, examining its German roots and later impact in India. Starting with the transformative work of pioneering artists like Kraftwerk and iconic records that established new sonic territories, we explore how Germany’s early techno scene fostered a culture of innovation, laying the groundwork for electronic music worldwide. This session follows the genre’s influence as it crossed into India, where electronic sounds blended with local music traditions to create unique, hybrid forms. Through a curated selection of vinyl records, including defining moments from Germany’s electronic legacy and India’s growing scene, we trace the artistic, technological, and cultural shifts that continue to shape electronic music globally.

VARUN DESAI

Varun Desai is a computer engineer working in the fields of synthesis and interactive design. He's been a teacher and lecturer for both hardware and software platforms as well as a graphic designer, coder, musician and synthesizer builder. His video art projects use real-time code-based visualizations that make use of custom-built microphones, cameras and sensors.

Varun has 17 years of experience working in arts and culture as a promoter, label manager, and producer. As a musician, composer and educator he has been involved in trans-cultural projects and residencies and has created works that are responsive to the technological advances of the digital age. Varun is the founder of Synthfarm, India’s leading residency for synthesis, modular sound, music production and synth-making and is the director of the Kolkata Jazzfest, one of India's longest running music festivals.

JIVRAJ SINGH

Jivraj Singh grew up in a musical household, which is perhaps why he initially resisted the call of music. At the age of 17, he relented and began to play drum set. The field of his practice has since grown to include percussion, electronics, record production, graphic design, concert visuals and intermedia works.

Singh has always had a predilection for the more obscure realms of creative life, where he is able to find the appropriate context for his musical preoccupations: gesture, touch, texture, shape, and the organized experience of these elements in time, space and mind.

The programme is open to all.
