In today's globalized world, the integration of every possible dimension of diversity has gained considerable importance. Ensuring that all students are on the same wavelength despite their dissimilarities is a huge challenge for today's educators. This challenge is like a wrinkle that needs to be ironed out with the help of relevant measures. 

This workshop will first show why diversity is essential, especially in DaF teaching. Afterwards, the expert will go into the practical level and discuss subject didactic examples as well as possible solutions to create an ideal and relaxed classroom atmosphere in a motley class. © Akshita Dhamija Akshita Dhamija is a German teacher by profession. Languages have always fascinated her and she has been learning German since her school days. She taught German at her alma mater for two years. Currently, she is teaching freelance, pursuing her Master's thesis at JNU and Green Diploma at Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan New Delhi. Her research interests are diversity and multilingualism in DaF teaching. Her dream is to encourage as many people as possible to acquire this beautiful language and accompany them on this fascinating language journey.

Workshop Description

With the changing times, there is a need to introduce new teaching and learning methods in the DaF classroom. In this post-corona digital world, one cannot cope without digital media. Multimodality is widely used for language teaching and learning, but we will show through our workshop that multimodal teaching is a good way to teach culture, migration, mobility and diversity in the DaF classroom. This will be shown with the help of examples of web series, songs, commercials, etc. There are some web series, songs and commercials that focus on migration, mobility and diversity. We will present some of these web series, songs and commercials interactively.

© Dr. Prachee Doval-Naithani Dr. Prachee Doval-Naithani has been an Assistant Professor since 2004 and also a Program Coordinator in German Studies at Amity University, Noida, India since 2013. In 1997, she started her career at a private school teaching German. She has a bachelor's degree in German Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University, a master's degree from Karnataka University, and a second master's degree in English Literature as well. In 2014, she completed her doctoral dissertation, which examined the mindset of diasporic Indians, in the field of management. She teaches the subjects such as the German language, literature, culture, history as well as world literature and DaF to German studies students.


© Savita Bhalla Savita Bhalla works as an assistant professor and programme director of German Studies at Amity University, Noida. She holds a Master's degree in German Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University (India). She has worked as a translator at the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, HCL Technologies & Sapient Corporation. She has been working as a German teacher since 2008. For 3 years she has taught at Delhi University. Since 2012, she has been teaching at Amity University. She teaches the subjects such as German as a Foreign Language (DaF), Business German, Translation Studies, Didactics and Regional Studies to German Studies students.

Workshop Description

Our world is changing rapidly; we are constantly becoming more mobile and our society is becoming more diverse. It is no wonder that the requirements for a DaF textbook are changing as well. In this workshop, the goal is to introduce the participants to "Good Idea! Deutsch für Jugendliche", the new textbook from Hueber Verlag, and to give them an insight into the course book and workbook, such as additional materials, the media package with audio and video material and, last but not least, the textbook service on the Internet.

© Rajashree Tirumalai-Hörig Rajashree Tirumalai-Hörig graduated with a bachelor's degree in natural sciences from Fergusson College in Pune in 1981 and then started learning German at the Goethe-Institut. She then completed her German studies at the University of Pune and worked as a programme assistant at the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Pune. Since 1990 she has also been an honorary teacher for all levels up to C2 and has been involved in the planning, organization and implementation of teacher training courses. She is also a freelance trainer for languages and intercultural issues and was a guest lecturer for didactics at the University of Pune. Since 2019, she has continued to work as a consultant in India for Hueber Verlag.

Workshop DescriptioN

STEM technical language in DaF lessons and in the context of professional orientation - how to implement?

Are technical languages "self-evident" when one has reached a solid language level? What difficulties do learners face when they have to deal with technical texts in the context of their studies or employment? What does teaching therefore have to do in advance and what are the first steps towards introducing language-sensitive actions in STEM lessons and in the context of professional orientations? During the workshop, these questions will be discussed in a practice-oriented manner in order to subsequently be able to create initial teaching materials for STEM lessons in small groups.

© Veronika Taranzinskaja Veronika Taranzinskaja joined the Goethe-Institut New Delhi in 2019 as a teaching expert and head of PASCH South Asia with a regional assignment. She studied German language and literature and politics at TU Berlin and management of culture and non-profit organizations at TU Kaiserslautern. In Berlin, she worked as a mentor for young migrants, accompanied them on their way into professional life and contributed as an author to the evaluation "Fit for Education and Civil Society". In recent years, Ms Taranzinskaja has worked as a teacher at secondary and vocational schools and as a project manager in three continents.

Workshop Description

In this workshop, the migration history of the Indian diaspora in Germany will first be outlined. The reasons for immigration will be discussed. Then, two recently published novels by second-generation German-Indian women writers - "Identiti" (2021) by Mithu Sanyal and "Sag mir nicht, wer ich bin" (2022) by Julia Wadhawan - will be introduced. Based on the dilemmas of the protagonists of the two novels, the thematic complex of 'race and identity in the Indo-German context will be discussed.

© Dr. Shruti Jain Dr. Shruti Jain is Associate Professor at the Global Languages Centre, O.P. Jindal Global University, Sonipat, India. She received her doctorate from the Centre of German Studies, JNU, New Delhi. Her dissertation focused on the Indian reception of Friedrich Nietzsche. Her areas of interest include literary theory, German literary history, and Indo-German cultural encounters. As a DAAD scholarship holder, she visited the Humboldt University of Berlin as a doctoral student from 2007 to 2008.
Dr Jain has been working in the field of German as a Foreign Language since 2002. She completed her German teacher training at the Max Mueller Bhavan, Pune and at the Goethe Institutes, Berlin and Munich. She has taught German at Max Mueller Bhavan, New Delhi for a long time. She has published several articles on German as a Foreign Language topics and has co-authored the material for the IGNOU distance learning course DTG (Diploma in Teaching German as a Foreign Language).

Do you sometimes get annoyed by your hesitant behaviour? Do you think you could definitely use more courage, with your colleagues sometimes envious of your self-confident appearance? Do you admire the creativity of a colleague when she herself sees nothing special in it? Self-image and external image are like two sides of the same coin. But what exactly do self-image and external image actually mean? And what determines it? How can one determine one's self-worth? We will explore these and similar questions in the workshop and try to gain insights into the topic of interculturality with regard to the concepts of migration, mobility and diversity. What happens when one goes abroad without prior knowledge? When does one emigrate abroad? When one settles in there? The workshop tries to find answers to these questions as well.

She is currently a teacher for German as a Foreign Language and Trainer/Multiplier for DLL Courses in Online and Face-to-Face formats. Ms Kaushik is also well-known for her various advanced training courses and workshops for DaF-Teachers on behalf of the German Educational Cooperation. Her latest area of interest is the use of Digital Media in teaching German as a Foreign Language.

She strongly believes in the maxim „Wer fremde Sprachen nicht kennt, weiß nichts von seiner eigenen.“ i.e., “Those who know nothing of foreign languages know nothing of their own (language).” by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Workshop Description

Music is ubiquitous in modern life: you hear it on TV, radio, in supermarkets, in restaurants, on the phone, and even when you're out and about. Listening to music is also one of the most popular leisure activities for young people and is, therefore, an important motivator in the classroom. Songs provide information about the country as well as about current topics. And with that, they also offer the possibility to do different activities in class and to train all skills. In the workshop, we will briefly present some steps for the didacticism of songs and music in DaF classes. How can we improve writing, listening and speaking with music? Which songs should we choose? What activities can be done with them? How can we use the lyrics and melody? In the workshop, such questions will be answered.

© Isha Virmani Isha Virmani has been working as a DaF teacher and teaching English in school since 2015. She completed her Master's in English Literature and has done her C2 certificate from Goethe Institute / Max Mueller Bhavan New Delhi. She started her career as a trainer in corporate but her inclination towards education and teaching brought her back to school. She continues to work as a workshop leader and facilitator for youth camps.


© Kavita Gandhi Kavita Gandhi has been working as a German teacher since 2012 and is currently working in a PASCH school (grades 6 to 12). She is a graduate of Cambridge School and has a university degree in economics. Then she studied the language at Goethe-Institut up to C2 upper level to follow her passion for foreign languages. Three times she received a scholarship to Germany and participated in many workshops. The German language has always been her passion and she believes that language not only connects people and nations, but also the mind.

Music is fun - learning with songs

Workshop Description

German as a foreign language is offered as a fifth or sixth subject at various schools in grades 11 and 12. Unfortunately, there are not many students in these secondary classes. Therefore, there is not much material or help available for teachers and students. In this workshop, our expert would like to introduce and explain the curriculum and exam pattern of CBSE. She would also like to introduce teachers to some useful resources for preparing material for their students in classes 11 and 12. Furthermore, information about CBSE's project work will be discussed.

© Pooja Parwanda Pooja Parwanda has been teaching German as a foreign language for over 23 years and has been employed by a private school, Delhi Public School, Gurgaon, in India since 2003. For the same story, you can create tasks at very different levels of difficulty.

Workshop Description

In order to support vocational orientations at schools in the best possible way, participants are given practical handouts for dealing with career-related STEM topics. The basis for this is the reader "Erste Schritte zu MINT in der Schule - Experimente, Projekte, Berufsbilder, Fachkommunikation", which was specially created for the initiative "Dreierpasch" at South Asian schools by Dr. Maria Steinmetz and Dr. Natalia Zalypiatskikh in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut New Delhi. The focus of the reader and the workshop is on hands-on science activities for students, which can be implemented in German as a foreign language or in STEM clubs in an action-oriented way and accompanied by technical language.

© Tanvi Duggal Tanvi Duggal has extensive experience in teaching German as a foreign language at various schools and has worked on many educational projects promoting cultural and social exchange between students from different regions. She was also a member of a German audit team at Ernst and Young Group. Workshop Description 

Due to the pandemic, millions of children around the world are online longer and more often. They are spending more and more time online because it is the only way they can continue to learn, stay in touch with others, play, and take advantage of recreational opportunities. But not all children have the knowledge, resources and skills to take advantage of the opportunities online communication offers and to protect themselves adequately from online risks. The more time girls and boys spend online, the more vulnerable they become to child rights violations such as sexual exploitation or cyber-grooming by perpetrators who try to exploit the new situation. That's why the Goethe Institute India, in partnership with the Digital Games Culture Foundation and Games Bavaria, conducted the first all-digital Game'n'Train Mixer program, which ran from February to April 2021. Game'n'Train Mixer sees itself as a peer learning program and a source of inspiration for cross-border cultural exchange. In the fifth edition of the Game Mixer, 20 game developers* from six countries met and developed games on the theme of "Digital Maturity." In this workshop, participants will learn about these different games. With the help of these games, students can be made aware of the dangers of the Internet and extreme dependence on smartphones.

Workshop Description

The paradigm shift that occurred in the digital era (Bearne, 2003) towards the predominance of multimodal texts (Cope & Kalantzis, 2000; Kress,2003; Kress & van Leeuwen, 1996) has affected the role of the reader(Kress, 2010; Serafini, 2012), who is currently expected to approach texts from a multimodal/tripartite framework (Serafini, 2014). Learning a language is not only dependent on learner factors but also on the linguistic and extra-linguistic factors irrespective of individual differences. There is no doubt that in addition to a variety of gestures, rituals and linguistic features, verbal language in the form of media texts remains one of the main sources of cultural transmission for today’s generation and cognitive structures as a cultural pedagogy.

With a focus on the teaching of visual literacy through various media texts in the language classroom, this workshop tries to look at media texts with reference to lesson plans in the secondary and tertiary DAF classroom frameworks.

Workshop Description

Many teachers are reluctant to use literary texts in the classroom because the language seems to be very demanding and a lot of time has to be taken up. But there are also such texts that not only give us a glimpse into the history and worldview of the time but could also be worked on with a small amount of time. This workshop will use two educational plays by the well-known playwright Bertolt Brecht to show how easily literary texts can be incorporated into the classroom and how they can be used to convey a moral message to students. Such short dramas can open up the space for discussion and debate and refresh the classroom enormously.

© Kirti Khera Although Kirti Khera tries to pass on the knowledge she acquires, she still feels in the place of a learner. Learning never stops for her. She has been formally working as a DaF teacher since 2006, although she has since taken short career breaks. She has taught German at various schools such as DPS Mathura Road; Salwan Public School, Rajendra Place; Indraprastha International School, Dwarka; St. Columbus School, CP; KV School, Tagore Garden. Teaching the youth has always been a challenge for her as it requires great efforts to read their minds and actively engage them in learning the foreign language. However, she always accepts this challenge and thus continues to learn. 

With the beginning of DLL teaching modules and the completion of GDS, she is currently teaching adults from different age groups. Having been given numerous opportunities to build skills through seminars, workshops, and even country studies seminars, she has been able to improve her skills in her career field. Her greed for learning led her to pursue a master's degree, which she completed during the lockdown period of two years, thus realizing her dream. After graduation, she wants to pick up something else that will keep her going and help her pass on what she has learned to her colleagues and her students. 

© Mani Kohli Mani Kohli is very fond of the German language. Learning and teaching German is just fun for her! Earlier she worked at German Bank, New Delhi for 6 years before she fully focused on German. With a successful C2 level in her pocket, she worked at St. Columba's School for 6 years. She simply loves the work as a teacher. Every day she learns something new and looks forward to the challenges the job brings. Mani has now been working at the Goethe-Institut since 2016 and teaches levels A1-B1 with full vigour.

This workshop is about designing effective and varied lessons with the model of "didactic analysis". The model describes the criteria to consider when planning. The model has proven to be a valuable and easy-to-follow tool for planning lessons. The "didactic analysis" includes eight guiding questions of lesson planning that help learners relate individual elements of lessons to each other. In addition, we often talk about the basic rhythm of instruction, where learning processes and instructional units can be divided into three basic sections or phases. Participants will become familiar with these phases of instruction.

© Shaswati Mazumdar After studying German language and literature at the Jawaharlal Nehru, Prof. Dr Shaswati Mazumdar completed her PhD on Feuchtwanger and Brecht and the treatment of Indian colonial history. 
From 1978 to 2018, she taught at the Department of Germanic and Romance Studies, University of Delhi. She retired in 2018 but is currently President of the Goethe Society of India.

Her research interests and publications: India in German-language literature; processes of cultural transformation in the German-speaking world and Europe; the reception of the Indian Revolt of 1857 in non-English-speaking Europe; world literature, comparative studies, and genre studies.

Workshop Description

Many teachers are reluctant to use literary texts in the classroom because the language seems to be very demanding and a lot of time has to be taken up. But there are also such texts that not only give us a glimpse into the history and worldview of the time but could also be worked on with a small amount of time. This workshop will use two educational plays by the well-known playwright Bertolt Brecht to show how easily literary texts can be incorporated into the classroom and how they can be used to convey a moral message to students. Such short dramas can open up the space for discussion and debate and refresh the classroom enormously.

© Kirti Khera Although Kirti Khera tries to pass on the knowledge she acquires, she still feels in the place of a learner. Learning never stops for her. She has been formally working as a DaF teacher since 2006, although she has since taken short career breaks. She has taught German at various schools such as DPS Mathura Road; Salwan Public School, Rajendra Place; Indraprastha International School, Dwarka; St. Columbus School, CP; KV School, Tagore Garden. Teaching the youth has always been a challenge for her as it requires great efforts to read their minds and actively engage them in learning the foreign language. However, she always accepts this challenge and thus continues to learn. 

With the beginning of DLL teaching modules and the completion of GDS, she is currently teaching adults from different age groups. Having been given numerous opportunities to build skills through seminars, workshops, and even country studies seminars, she has been able to improve her skills in her career field. Her greed for learning led her to pursue a master's degree, which she completed during the lockdown period of two years, thus realizing her dream. After graduation, she wants to pick up something else that will keep her going and help her pass on what she has learned to her colleagues and her students. 

© Mani Kohli Mani Kohli is very fond of the German language. Learning and teaching German is just fun for her! Earlier she worked at German Bank, New Delhi for 6 years before she fully focused on German. With a successful C2 level in her pocket, she worked at St. Columba's School for 6 years. She simply loves the work as a teacher. Every day she learns something new and looks forward to the challenges the job brings. Mani has now been working at the Goethe-Institut since 2016 and teaches levels A1-B1 with full vigour.

Workshop Description

Due to globalization, one should know a foreign language in today's world. And every person who wants to understand a language in speech and writing with confidence and use it himself must get to know the culture of the target language. Regional studies in DaF lessons are an attempt to combine the teaching of the language with the imparting of cultural information. In this workshop, the use of regional studies in DaF lessons will be discussed on the basis of the book "Hallo Deutsch".

© Supreet Kaur Supreet Kaur is a native of Delhi. After completing her German teacher training at Goethe-Institut in 2006, she taught German as a foreign language at Goethe Institute, Delhi for 2 years. Due to her marriage, she moved to Patiala in 2008. After that, she gained experience as a DaF teacher in companies, Punjabi University, Patiala, KV School, Patiala. Since she finished her training as a multiplier, she has been conducting workshops for DaF teachers and students. She is also currently working as a German teacher in her own institute, German Linguistics in Patiala.

Workshop Description

In this workshop, the migration history of the Indian diaspora in Germany will first be outlined. The reasons for immigration will be discussed. Then, two recently published novels by second-generation German-Indian women writers - "Identiti" (2021) by Mithu Sanyal and "Sag mir nicht, wer ich bin" (2022) by Julia Wadhawan - will be introduced. Based on the dilemmas of the protagonists of the two novels, the thematic complex of race and identity in the Indo-German context will be discussed.

© Dr. Shruti Jain Dr. Shruti Jain is Associate Professor at the Global Languages Centre, O.P. Jindal Global University, Sonipat, India. She received her doctorate from the Centre of German Studies, JNU, New Delhi. Her dissertation focused on the Indian reception of Friedrich Nietzsche. Her areas of interest include literary theory, German literary history, and Indo-German cultural encounters. As a DAAD scholarship holder, she visited the Humboldt University of Berlin as a doctoral student from 2007 to 2008.

Dr Jain has been working in the field of German as a Foreign Language since 2002. She completed her German teacher training at the Max Mueller Bhavan, Pune and at the Goethe Institutes, Berlin and Munich. She has taught German at Max Mueller Bhavan, New Delhi for a long time. She has published several articles on German as a Foreign Language topics and has co-authored the material for the IGNOU distance learning course DTG (Diploma in Teaching German as a Foreign Language).
 

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

In the language classroom, teaching and learning media accompany the learning process from the very beginning. The variety of media makes communication possible, as it is reality for many learners outside the classroom. It is important that teachers can select and didactize teaching and learning media for their target group and that they know how to adapt supplementary materials for their own lessons. Using diverse and authentic resources helps learners to acquire a better knowledge of the subject and is therefore essential for successful teaching. This workshop will help teachers (especially IB Curriculum) to identify and analyze the latest appropriate materials and thus bring diversity of materials into the German classroom.
