German universities have an excellent reputation. Their academic degrees are recognized worldwide and are often considered an indicator of a sound and practical education. One of the most well-known advantages of studying in Germany is that there are often no tuition fees, even for international students.
If you want to study at a German college or university, you need a university entrance qualification (HZB) or a degree that qualifies you to study.
Here you can check whether your school certification is considered as a university entrance qualification in Germany.
School graduates with the above-mentioned degree must attend a 6-12 month preparatory course (Studienkolleg), including an examination at the end, before they are allowed to study at a German university or college.
There are various main subject areas at the Studienkollegs, which prepare students for their future fields of study.
The main subjects are e.g.:
- M-Kurs: for the field of study of medicine, biology or pharmaceutical. Main subjects: German, mathematic and sciences
- T-Kurs: for the technical and scientific field of study. Main subjects: German, mathematic, physic and chemistry
- W-Kurs: for the field of study of economic and social science. Main subjects: German, mathematic, political sciences, history or geography, English
- G-Kurs: for humanistic and linguistic field of study, history, German studies or philosophy. Main subjects: German, history, German or English literature, sociology/geography
- S-Kurs: for the field of study of languages, foreign languages that are not German. Main subjects: German, foreign language, history or sociology/geography or German literature (There are the combination of G-/S-Kurs at some universities)
Alternatively, three universities in Bremen and Bremerhaven offer an opportunity through the program ”Prime" to take the required exams already in the place of origin and to apply to university from there as well.
With the Prime program, you can attend a Studienkolleg at these three universities:
