In the post-World War II decades, Thai architects, many of whom had studied abroad, embraced modern principles as they were forced to address the pressing demand for residential and commercial space as well as the shortage of public facilities in the rapidly growing capital of Thailand. Although building materials and budgets were limited, their designs were rooted in their time and place, reflecting the local climate, social and cultural values, materials, technology and utilization in an often unique and aesthetically pleasing way.

With more than 300 buildings and ensembles documented, the exhibition “BANGKOK MODERN Architecture of the 1950s-1970s” by photographer Walter Koditek gives a comprehensive overview on the architecture of that transformative period. The exhibition is based on a book published by River Books, Bangkok.

The panel discussion and talks aim to highlight the significance of Thai modern architecture, emphasizing its cultural value, aesthetic appeal, and the necessity of its preservation for future generations. At a time when energy efficiency and resource conservation are global priorities, there is much to learn from modern architecture. Modern Thai architecture emphasizes climate-conscious design by adapting to Thailand's tropical climate, using brise-soleils, ventilation, and building orientation to naturally cool spaces and reduce energy consumption. Additionally, the use of local materials minimizes costs, carbon footprints and environmental impact. By examining Bangkok’s architectural transformation from the 1950s to the 1970s, this panel discussion highlights how Modernism was adapted to the city. It also celebrates the creativity and innovation of Thai Modernist architects while underscoring the importance of documenting and conserving Thailand’s modern architectural heritage.
