The look and functionality of the media lounge is quite different from what you are used to. We are thrilled about the concept and think of it as a huge leap forward that will allow us to serve you even better.
In the Media Lounge you will find:
German films on DVD's in the American standard
German and English language reference books and encyclopedia
A selection of German literature in English translation
Daily and weekly German newspapers and periodicals
DVD and video viewing stations
German Music- and spoken word CD's
Audio listening stations
PC work stations with highspeed Internet access
Wireless Hotspot
An extensive collection of German films on DVD represents the core holdings of the Media lounge. We carry DVD's in the American standard in both German and English subtitled language versions.
A great number of these titles are available only through the Goethe Institute.
Reference and PAL DVD's or archived videos may be viewed on our multisystem viewing station.
You are invited to use our multimedia PC workstations for research and to utilise our reference resources.
German Television is shown continiously on a big screen during Office hours. Deutsche Welle Television
Lending procedures
The Media Lounge of the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles is open to the public.
Use of our resources in the Media Lounge are free of charge.
To borrow books, videos and audiovisual media a annual membership is required.
The fee for a Media Lounge membership is 10.- (5.- for students and seniors). Membership and lending privileges can be obtained upon presentation of a local picture identification. Educational Institutions in the western US may apply for membership by mail, email or Fax.
A FRIENDS OF GOETHE Membership at the Inner Circle level and above includes a Media Lounge membership at no additional cost.
Lending periods
2 weeks for all AV materials ( including videos and DVD's) and periodicals
4 weeks for books
Patrons may borrow three items at a time.
The lending period for books and some audiovisual materials may be extended providing the item has not been reserved.
DVD's and Videos can not be extended but may be returned after hours using the Video return slot, next to the main entrance and to evening events.
Cultural Institutions, partners, schools and educators may negotiate extended lending periods if materials are used within a curricullum, research or for curatorial purposes. Materials can be mailed to educational institutions or educators after they established lending privileges, the recipient carries the cost of insured return shipping.
We will gladly advise you on available materials or suggest suitable materials for classroom use.
Aside from the membership fees there is no charge to check out materials, however there is a $ 0.50 per day / per item late charge that will be collected upon return of the materials. Patrons with materials overdue for more than two months are liable for the full cost of replacing them including licensing fees. Uncollected fines and replacement fees may become subject to small court proceedings.
We reserve the right to revoke the user's privileges in case of repeated tardiness with materials or other abuse of the mediathek rules and regulations.
Due to changing licensing terms some of our materials may not be available at a given time and titles can not be guaranteed for specific dates. Licensing restriction provide that some materials may only be viewed in the Media Lounge and can not be borrowed. We suggest to confirm availability of requested titles before ordering by phone or email.
