Dancing Beethoven
By: Arantxa Aguirre
Switzerland, Spain 2016
79 min.
French, English, Japanese Spanish with English subtitles
Choreographer Maurice Béjart, who died in 2007, adapted Beethoven's Ninth Symphony as an energetic ballet version in which dance and Beethoven go hand in hand.
Spanish director Arantxa Aguirre accompanied the rehearsals for a performance of Béjart’s piece in Japan over a period of nine months. Her documentary film Dancing Beethoven portrays the creation process, illustrates the mental and physical trials that the actors go through during the preparation, and functions also as a homage to Maurice Béjart, Beethoven, and the arts.
Curious to learn more about the film? Join us for a Happy Hour Q&A with director Arantxa Aguirre on Tuesday, June 2nd at 5:00 pm (CDT). The talk will take place on Zoom, Arantxa will join us from Spain. More here.
