Goethe Book Club: Alex Beer's The Second Rider (2017/2018)
Read and discuss works by contemporary German authors in this series hosted by the Goethe-Institut. All books can be read in recent English translation or in the German original; our discussion will be in English. Led by local German professor Amanda Sheffer (The Catholic University of America), this book club focuses on contemporary fiction and will explore experiences and thoughts about the text.

A man is strangled under mysterious circumstances in Vienna right after the First World War. It’s up to Detective August Emmerich and his young partner, Ferdinand Winter, to undercover why this man was so cruelly murdered. Altered by the war, Vienna is a mixture of rich and poor, blended families, and those trying to rebuild or move away from the city forever. Explore the Viennese underground and undercover a killer in this suspenseful thriller.

Alex Beer (1977-)
Alex Beer is an Austrian author who studied both business and archaeology. She lived for a year in New York before returning to Vienna, where she currently resides.
