Workshop for German Teachers
Racism-Critical German Teaching

Workshop by Maurice Soulié: Racism-critical German Teaching

Goethe-Institut Chicago

In this interactive training, we will explore how to design German language classes that critically address racism and the pitfalls to be aware of in this process.
Together, we will examine how using reflective language can help us recognize and avoid discriminatory structures. Language is power – and language creates reality: through examples and exercises, we will take a critical look at specific terms in German and their potential impact. The aim is to develop an awareness for inclusive language and to set the foundation for a sustainably anti-racist approach in teaching.
A key focus of the workshop will be the question: What image of Germany is conveyed in the classroom, and which people and perspectives are included – or left out? This workshop encourages participants to critically reflect on their own teaching practices and provides tools for integrating anti-racist principles effectively into lesson planning.

The training, organised in cooperation with the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), will begin with an opening lecture and a panel discussion about the topic Racism in Education – Perspectives from Germany and the US on December 13. The workshop, led by Maurice Soulié on December 14, will apply the insights to the present and to teachers' practical experiences.
