Graphic Novels from Germany
With the Stroke of the Pen

It was a long way from the beginnings of German-language comic classics by Wilhelm Busch to Rolf Kauka's Eulenspiegel publications, the avant-garde of the 90s and the current graphic novels. In the meantime, the German comic landscape has been able to establish itself internationally: Barbara Yelin, Olivia Vieweg, Stefanie Wunderlich, Nora Krug, Birgit Weyhe, Jens Harder, Sascha Hommer and many more have been translated into various languages and now enjoy a broad readership outside the German-speaking world. Nevertheless, the German comic has retained its identity and makes no compromises in terms of content. Our focus is on the graphic novel scene in Germany and some of its most important authors. We take a look back at the last decades of German comic history and let some of the protagonists of the scene have their say. In May 2019, we are particularly pleased to welcome the authors Nora Krug and Birgit Weyhe to the TCAF in Toronto and the BD Festival in Montreal respectively.

The picture above shows Olivia Vieweg's creation Axolotl reading German comics. We would like to thank the author for this exclusive contribution to our dossier.

When you hold a graphic novel in your hands, you're holding artist blood made ink.
