"Franz Kafka. Selected short prose"
The Goethe-Institut in Addis Ababa is pleased to offer the reading public in Ethiopia access to this important writer and his world of thought and imagination by printing texts by Franz Kafka translated into Amharic. The special occasion for this publication is the "Kafka Year 2024", which marks the centenary of Franz Kafka's death on June 3.
Franz Kafka's works are part of the literary canon not only in Germany, not only in German-speaking countries. His narrative prose, whether novels, short stories or parables, is universal and timeless, which is why his texts are read in schools worldwide, in the original or in translation, and as classics of world literature are on the curriculum of many universities and in the interest not only of literary research but also of readers everywhere.
In order to be able to show the many facets of his work and influence in some areas, the Goethe-Institut and its partners worldwide are dedicating themselves to Franz Kafka in a variety of ways, whether as an author or as an illustrator, his work and its reception.
In Ethiopia, the Goethe-Institut and the embassies of Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic have joined forces to put the year 2024 in the light of Franz Kafka in a variety of ways, including lectures, readings, workshops, exhibitions and film screenings.
This publication of stories and other selected prose, both in the original German and - thanks to the translation by Mulu Worku - in Amharic, is one of these offers to the Ethiopian public to get to know Franz Kafka and his world.
At the book presentation on March 7, some of these Kafka texts were read aloud and discussed in German and Amharic at the Goethe-Institut.
