Saša Stanišić fled to Germany with his parents during the Bosnian War in 1992. He studied German as a foreign language and Slavic studies in Heidelberg and published poetry, essays and short stories in literary magazines. His debut novel How the Soldier repairs the gramophone, which made it onto the shortlist of the German Book Prize, was published in 2006. His novel published in 2014, Before the Feast, was awarded the Leipzig Book Fair Prize. In 2019 he received the German Book Prize for his autobiographically-based work Herkunft. Saša Stanišič lives in Hamburg.
