Join us for an event to celebrate the creative forces of literary translation and a healthy dose of competition with Artificial Intelligence, which may - or may not - take away all our jobs!

You will witness two experienced translators: Christophe Fricker and Ayça Türkoğlu, performing live translations on stage against DeepL / ChatGPT / Google Translate which will be in the hands of machine translation expert, Janiça Hackenbuchner. After each round of texts, ranging from 18th century literature through to children’s books and experimental texts, the public will assess: who translated it better - the humans or the machines?

Beers, soft drinks and pretzels will ensure a lively and fun evening!

The event will be moderated by Jamie Bulloch.

Jamie Bulloch is a translator from German with fifty titles to his name, including works by Arno Geiger, Robert Menasse, Daniela Krien and Sebastian Fitzek. His translation of Birgit Vanderbeke’s The Mussel Feast won the 2014 Schlegel-Tieck Prize, an award for which he has been runner-up on two further occasions. He is also the author of Karl Renner: Austria.

Christophe Fricker is a literary translator and director of the MA Translation at the University of Bristol.

Janiça Hackenbuchner is a PhD student at Ghent University, where she is researching on gender bias in machine translation. She is co-founder of DeBiasByUs, a platform to raise awareness of and create datasets for gender bias in machine translation, which arose at a Goethe-Institut hackathon in 2021 and was funded by them.

Ayça Türkoğlu is a literary translator working from German and Turkish. Her work has been shortlisted for the Helen & Kurt Wolff Translator's Prize and longlisted for the Warwick Women in Translation Prize. Her latest translation, ALL DOGS DIE by Cemile Şahin, will be published next April by MTO Press.
