6-week Artist Research Workshop

Goethe-Institut Hongkong is calling for artists in Hong Kong to participate in the research workshop which will be held over 6 weekends period in October to November 2024 and bring together 8 selected artists representing a mix of artistic professions and research interests.
Context:
The artist-research workshop "Out of Delivery: Emotional Migration in Hong Kong" is part of a broader project on loneliness, organized by the Goethe-Institut in East and Central Asia, scheduled for 2025. This project explores the complex themes of loneliness, self-imposed isolation, and inner emigration through both artistic and discursive lenses. In collaboration with Goethe-Instituts across East and Central Asia, as well as artists and cultural institutions in cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Kyoto, Seoul, Taipei, Ulaanbaatar, Tashkent, Almaty, and Berlin, the project will feature multiple thematic initiatives that blend local perspectives with overarching co-productions.
Introduction:
"Out of Delivery: Emotional Migration in Hong Kong," seeks to explore how individuals in Hong Kong navigate the challenges of physical distance and urban isolation through technology-driven solutions. From e-commerce and online meetings to dating apps and AI customer services, these adaptations are reshaping the ways we connect, creating new intersections between emotion, technology, and urban life.
Through the 6-week time, the workshop offers a nuanced exploration of how emotional and economic exchanges shape personal and collective experiences in the city, not only highlights the intersection of technology and emotion in Hong Kong but also fosters a deeper understanding of how such dynamics influence various marginalised and mainstream communities within the region. The workshop also explores new forms of research that renew the art creation process and understanding of mediums. By examining these intersections, "Out of Delivery" aspires to create a platform for dialogue, reflection, and understanding across theories, contributing to a broader discourse on technology, emotion, and urban life in contemporary settings of Hong Kong.
Objective:
The workshop aims to bring together a diverse group of artists to critically engage with how global technologies are localised within the unique socio-cultural context of Hong Kong. Through reading groups, guest lectures, and field trips, participants will reflect on and critique these dynamics, exploring new forms of art creation and exhibition-making as methods of research dissemination. The workshop will culminate in a collective exploration of how emotional and economic exchanges shape both personal and collective experiences in the city, contributing to a broader discourse on the intersections of technology, emotion, and urban life.
Participants in this workshop may have the opportunity to further develop their research and artistic projects beyond the initial 6-week period. Selected artists and their works developed from the workshop may be extended and showcased in a curated programme scheduled for 2025, providing a platform to present the evolved ideas and engage with a broader audience. This programme will highlight the innovative responses and critical reflections emerging from the workshop, furthering the conversation on the impact of technology and emotion in contemporary Hong Kong.
Workshop Details:
Duration: October to November 2024 (online and offline)
Participants: 8 artists working and based in Hong Kong
Allowance: HKD 2,500 per participant after completing the 6-week workshop
Language: English and Cantonese
Locations: Various sites across Hong Kong, including Goethe Institut Hong Kong, 2 local field trips, 1 reading group, 2 guest lectures and 1 sharing session
Eligibility:
Artists must be currently working and based in Hong Kong.
Open to artists from all disciplines, including but not limited to contemporary art, digital media, performance, and interdisciplinary practice, and artists of all ages, genders and linguistic, cultural and other minorities. If you belong to any of these groups, feel free to indicate this in your application. Please also indicate in the motivation letter if you need any special assistance or conditions for participating in the workshop. Participants should have a strong interest in the themes of emotional migration, technology, and the dynamics of contemporary living in Hong Kong.
Allowance:
Each selected participant will receive an allowance of HKD 2,500 to support their involvement in the workshop.
Application Process:
Interested artists should submit a brief statement of interest with 500 words (in English or in Chinese), a portfolio of recent work, and a CV by 6 October 2024 (Thursday) 24:00 to Ms KY Wong by email cw2750@gmail.com. The selection will be based on the relevance of the applicant’s practice to the workshop themes and their potential to contribute to the group’s research and discussions.
