Goethe-Gallery & Black Box Studio

Co-presented with The Ukrainian Society of Hong Kong

Goethe-Institut Hongkong is pleased to co-present with The Ukrainian Society of Hong Kong two exhibitions at the Goethe-Gallery and the Black Box Studio from September 5 to 14, 2024. Paintings by Ukrainian artist Kateryna Zhovta will be featured in the Goethe-Gallery, while selected works by children of Ukraine showcased in the digital museum Mom, I See War will be presented in the Black Box Studio.

Kateryna Zhovta was born in Mohyliv-Podil’s'kyi, Ukraine, where she finished school. Then she studied at the National University named after Ivan Ohienko, majoring in Restoration of works of art. After the Russian invasion, a Ukrainian artist lost her job. Being overfull with fear and anxiety, Kateryna found art as a way to release her emotions. She developed a series of paintings about Ukrainian women: mother, sister, grandmother, daughter, friend, fiancé. The mix of colors means the palette of emotions. Faceless women embody emptiness caused by war.

The exhibition in the Black Box Studio consists of selected works from "Mom, I See War", an international digital museum dedicated to documenting children's personal experiences in the context of war through their artistic expressions. The project’s origin began in Ukraine in March 2022 when the country found itself under a full-scale invasion by a neighboring power. Its primary mission was to convey how Ukrainian children were navigating the challenges of war. Over several months, the project's dedicated team collected over 15,000 drawings made by children in the midst of this wartime crisis. These artworks have now been carefully preserved within the digital "Mom, I See War" archive and showcased in offline exhibitions in more than 60 cities across the world.

Please join us on the Ukrainian Culture Day on September 14, 2024 (Sat) from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM. On this last day of the two exhibitions, there will be a Ukrainian bazaar with handicrafts, food and drinks, as well as Ukrainian folk dance workshops. Please check out the programme details here: Ukrainian Culture Day.
