1. Why did you choose this training?
 
In 2017 I had the opportunity to fly to Germany for the first time. I spent three weeks in summer in Schwäbisch Hall (Swabian Hall), a lovely and picturesque small town. The visit was part of a series of activities for the summer youth course of a partner school of Goethe-Institut Indonesien (PASCH). After three weeks, I began to think about how I could return to Germany. I informed myself about au pair, FSJ and Studienkolleg. First, I was ready to participate in the au pair program. But then my German teacher suggested I try education. Now I live in Germany and work as a ReFa trainee in a five-star restaurant.
 
2. What personal and professional requirements do you think are important for this occupation?
 
The most important thing is good command of German. My advice is to have a language certificate of at least Level B1. Another crucial factor is the mental strength to prepare oneself well to avoid culture shock.
 
3. What tasks do you enjoy most and why?
 
I like working in the bar, where I’ve learned a lot about drinks I didn't know well in Indonesia, such as wine, beer, cocktails, coffee and juices.
 
4. What do you learn in the vocational school? How often do you go there?
 
I go to school once a week. There I study politics, mathematics, German, English, service, magazine and “kitchen”.
 
5. What tips do you have for Indonesians interested in this training?
 
My advice: gather as much information as possible about the vocational training you are interested in. Improve your knowledge of German and don’t think too much if you are absolutely sure.
 
6. And after the training? What professional goals do you have?
 
After completing my training, I intend to move to a big city. There I could work in a bar, restaurant, café or hotel.
