Replanting a piece of vegetable that has only the stalk left, the cultivation of fruit from seeds, or the planting of seeds are things that need to be tried and mastered in daily urban life. Urban gardening is not new—many city dwellers do it. In addition to planting decorative plants, many are now getting into growing plants that produce edible roots, leaves, flowers or fruit.
With the same enthusiasm for transferring knowledge, the Goethe-Institut Bandung is collaborating with Seni Tani and setting up a theme area called “Do it Yourself Urban Gardening”. It contains various kinds of plants for exchanging or using the seeds. A catalogue of gardening hacks, reading material and board games on similar topics are also available.
As a kick-off event for the creation of this Themenecke, a workshop titled “DIY Urban Gardening” will be held on Saturday 13 November with Sustainable Indonesia. Registration is open until 12 November.

The Themenecke and items such as gardening tools included in the “Bibliothek der Dinge” (Library of Things) will be launched on Saturday 27 November at 4 p.m. via Instagram Live on the Goethe-Institut Bandung channel.
Library visitors who want to start gardening can borrow the garden starter kits for free through the pick-up service provided by the Goethe-Institut Bandung library.
Seni Tani is a youth-initiated program in RT 5 RW 14, Kel. Sukamiskin, Kec. Arcamanik, Bandung under the auspices of 1000Kebun Community. Seni Tani provides space for young gardening enthusiasts who are interested in learning about agriculture and upgrading their skills. Seni Tani’s activities include making use of uninhabitable urban land to build food gardens through regenerative agriculture by encouraging people to become urban farmers via CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), community empowerment and education in regenerative agriculture.
Sustainable Indonesia is a social enterprise focusing on “Sustainable Capacity Building” education. It encourages people to think about living in harmony with nature and their immediate environment while promoting sustainability in community actions and activities. This is facilitated by involving different elements of society—the government, NGOs, the private sector and civil society—through collaboration and participation in creating sustainable solutions for the greater good.
