On 29 September 2017, Germany@Home presented Irish writer Paul McVeigh with his debut novel The Good Son and his German translator Hans-Christian Oeser.

Born in Belfast, Paul began his career as a playwright before moving to London where he wrote comedy shows. He co-founded the London Short Story Festival, of which, he was Director and Curator from 2014-2015. The Good Son has won The Polari Prize and The McCrea Literary Award and was shortlisted for The Guardian’s ‘Not The Booker’ Prize.
He has written comedy, essays, flash fiction, a novel, plays and short stories, and his work has been performed on radio, stage and television, and published in seven languages.

McVeigh writes with warmth and humor about a time of poverty and violence.
His two translators Hans-Christian Oeser and Nina Frey were able to transfer this tone of voice wonderfully into the German translation.
