School Exchanges
A number of German schools are looking for partner schools in Ireland.
The Albert-Schweitzer-Schule is a grammar school with about 1300 students (ages 10 -18) and 100 teachers situated in the state of Hesse, not far away from the university cities Frankfurt/Main, Marburg, Gießen, Fulda and Kassel. This year we are happy to celebrate the school’s 150th anniversary. We already participate in exchange programmes with France, Sweden, Russia, Poland, England and Peru and, additionally, would love to get in contact with an Irish school for a regular exchange of pupils.

A Bavarian Grammar School is looking for an English-speaking school in Ireland in order to establish student exchanges and/or international projects
We are really interested in establishing a school partnership with a school in Ireland. Are you interested in running a student exchange and/or school projects, too?
Here are some basic bits of information about our school:
The Albrecht-Ernst-Gymnasium in Oettingen/Germany. Our school, the Albrecht-Ernst-Gymnasium, is a very old and humanistic grammar school. It was founded by a Count of Oettingen as early as in 1563 in the beautiful town of Oettingen in central Bavaria/Germany. This town (population: about 5000) consists of many nice old buildings, too, because it once was (and in fact still is) the royal seat of the Earls of Oettingen. By the way, Oettingen is not far away from Bavaria´s big cities: Augsburg and Munich to the south, Nuremberg to the north.
Nowadays, about 900 students (year 5-12; age: 10-19) and about 70 teachers work together in the new buildings of our school, not far from the town centre. About one third of our pupils are from Oettingen, two thirds live in the surrounding towns and villages.
We think that contacts to schools abroad play an essential role in enabling our students to become “mature and responsible” Europeans and cosmopolitans. That´s why we have constantly been running school projects and student exchanges with our partner schools in Portugal and Greece. Nevertheless, we would like to start student exchanges and/or projects with an English-speaking school in Ireland, too. We would like to give our pupils the chance to apply their language skills and to participate in the European idea directly by meeting (and maybe working together with) common Europeans of their age group. We have a lot to offer as well.
For more information, just feel free to have a look at pictures, figures and details: Here is our website: www.gymnasiumoettingen.de.
If you are interested in the idea of establishing a school partnership with us, consisting of student exchanges and/or projects (or work experience?), please do contact us. We are really looking forward to hearing from you.

Our school is maintained by the RC Diocese of Münster, in Northwestern Germany. It is a private but state-recognized and largely state-financed school. We presently teach about 1160 pupils (about 490 boys and 670 girls)in grades 5 (age 10/11) to 13 (age 18/19). Most of our pupils pass the “Abitur” at the end of grade 13, thus qualifying for university entrance or further professional training.
The first foreign language of all our pupils at grade 5 is English. Almost all our pupils will continue studying English up to grade 13. In grade 6 pupils may then choose between French or Latin.
We are keen on organizing exchange visits and any other links (e.g. topic-related projects, letter writing, e-mail messages, individual exchanges during breaks etc.).

Our school is a secondary school located in the south of Berlin. Students are between 12 and 18 years old and learn either English or French as first or second foreign language, respectively. Our school is very active in music, drama, politics and languages. We enjoy long-standing exchanges with schools in France and the UK.
Recently, we successfully applied for a short term Erasmus+ project: (Re)connecting Europe. It aims to reestablish contacts within Europe after exchanges were interrupted due to covid. Its objective is to raise awareness of Europe and the European family, encourage life-long language learning and open students up to less frequently learnt languages.
Our two Erasmus partners are a Catalan and a Finnish school. We are looking for a third partner to add another language like Gaelic, for example.

Our school is a private "Gymnasium" (grammar school) with ca. 400 pupils between 11 and 19 years of age. It offers a wide range of both outdoor and sport facilities, but also unique cultural experiences with Salzburg (30 minutes by car) and Munich (90 minutes) nearby. Our school attaches great importance to sport and is proud of having had some of the most outstanding German athletes of winter sport among its pupils. We are looking for a partner from Ireland to start a regular exchange of pupils.
The school
The Berchtesgaden Jugenddorf-Christophorusschule is located high above the romantic Königssee (King's Lake) at an altitude of about 1200 m (4000 ft) in the Bavarian Alps at the southeastern tip of Bavaria, Germany. Our school offers all qualifications of the Bavarian school system including the university entrance diploma "Abitur". The school consists of several departments with an emphasis on either natural sciences or on languages (German, English, French, Spanish and Latin). What makes our school unique is that winter sports athletes can combine their education with sports training (downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, bobsledging, luge, etc.). Moreover the school provides facilities for the medical treatment of students suffering from respiratory diseases, neurodermatitis, diabetes and a number of allergies. Our allergen-free Alpine climate and the healthy mountain air greatly contribute to the therapy. We also offer special training for dyslexic pupils.
The boarding school - The "Jugenddorf"
Our idyllic houses are scattered all over the school campus. Each house is shared by about 15 youngsters and their dormitory counselors, accommodated in single and double rooms. Meals are served in a central dining hall offering both standard and vegetarian food. The teachers and the dormitory counselors closely cooperate during the after-class study periods.
Extracurricular activities
The school's outstanding location high in the mountains enable students to engage in healthy outdoor activities like hiking and mountaineering. Winter sport facilities including a bobsled run, cross-country ski trails, ski lifts, ski jumps and half-pipes are available nearby. In summer, white water rafting, canoeing and climbing are available in the vicinity. The fine arts program includes courses in photography, pottery, choir singing and musical instruments as well as drama groups. In addition, the nearby cultural metropolises of Salzburg, Vienna, Verona and Munich offer an ongoing selection of musical events and fine choice of museums.
Our pedagogical principles
Our education is based on Christian ideas and values. Furthermore we aim at a comprehensive development of body, mind and soul in harmony with nature, sports, the arts and education. Special emphasis is put on teamwork and social competence in the form of honesty, respect for others, willingness to cooperate and tolerance. Our educational efforts also aim at self-discipline and the respect for our natural environment.

Are you our new Irish partner school?
Who are we?
We are a Catholic secondary school located in the heart of the city of Wolfsburg in Lower Saxony, Germany.
What are we looking for?
In accordance with our school motto “living together – learning from each other”, we as a Europe-oriented school are looking for a partner school in Ireland to enable an intercultural exchange – both digital and personal – between students and teachers.
What distinguishes our school?
Our school is attended by students from year 5 to 13, with three classes per year. As we are a Catholic school, a cooperation shaped by Christian values is particularly important to us.
Carrying the title “eco-school”, we try to integrate environmental protection and sustainable development in our everyday school life, e. g. by growing and maintaining our school forest.
Our goal is to integrate the European idea into school life. English is taught as the first foreign language, starting in 5th year. In year 6, our students choose a second foreign language: French, Spanish or Latin. English-language history classes are offered as well.
Due to our cooperation with the football club VfL Wolfsburg, young talents who attend the VfL football academy are offered a joint academic and athletic education.
Where can you find us?
With its 125,000 inhabitants, the city of Wolfsburg is primarily known as headquarters of Volkswagen. The city offers many extracurricular places of learning, such as the popular interactive science centre “Phaeno”, the art museum, the theatre or the city archive.
For more information, please visit our website: https://www.eichendorffschule.de/

We are a large vocational school taking pride in the diversity of our student body and the educational opportunities we offer. Students can train to become cooks, hairdressers, educators, custom-tailors or they can do their A levels. For students doing the latter, EKS offers five different major subjects, namely biological and chemical engineering, nutrition, health and pedagogy. English is mandatory. Thus, we are looking for a partner interested in student exchange, preferably in an English-speaking country in Europe. At the time of the exchange, our students will be about 17 years old.
EKS is in close vicinity to the city centre and the University of Kassel with public transport easily available. Kassel features a world heritage landscape park and is home to documenta, the world’s biggest exhibition of contemporary art which takes place every five years. Our hometown has about 200,000 inhabitants and is located right in the middle of Germany, approx. 200 km from Frankfurt a.M.

It is a co-educative secondary school of Catholic origin, nowadays open to children of all Christian denominations. Our students come from dedicated families that are being encouraged to contribute to a vivid school live. The "Engelsburg's" aim is to educate people who are ready to live Christian values and take responsibility as politically mature citizens. Every student starts to learn English as first foreign language at the age of 10 (or earlier). You will find more information on our website (German only): https://engelsburg.smmp.de/
Our hometown Kassel is located at the heart of Germany and has a rich history. This is where the Brothers Grimm collected their stories; you can still follow their trails at many places. In addition, our town features a world heritage landscape park and the world's biggest exposition of modern art.

We are looking for a long-term partnership with an Irish secondary school, preferably one that teaches German as a second language. We look forward to hosting Irish students (aged 14-16) for about one week each year and we would like to pay your school a yearly visit, too. Students will be staying with families of students of your school, who are taking part in the exchange. We have a long tradition of exchanges with schools in Poland, Spain, Italy and France, which are very popular among our students.
Approximately 1,000 students are taught by 100 teachers at the Europaschule Troisdorf. We offer our students a choice of fine art or bilingual profile. English is the first second language taught, followed by French, Spanish and/or Latin. As a Europaschule we are dedicated to the European philosophy and initiate several European projects for different age groups as well as encourage our students to take part in European Competitions.
Our grammar school is located in Troisdorf, the Cologne/Bonn Metropolitan Region. This is a highly attractive and popular tourist area, not only because of Cologne as a region’s cultural hub with a landmark of High Gothic architecture, the twin-spired Cologne Cathedral and the beautiful Rhine River or the city of Bonn being the former capital of Germany. The region also offers a scenic landscape with the Nature Park Siebengebirge and Castle Drachenfels. The Cologne/Bonn airport is only a few minutes away from Troisdorf.
For further information, please do not hesitate to contact Sarah Köster, s.koester@europaschule-troisdorf.eu or browse our homepage, www.europaschule-troisdorf.de

The Geschwister-Scholl-Gesamtschule is a secondary (comprehensive) school with approximately 1200 pupils (aged 10-20) and 125 teachers. We are an inclusive school, which means that we teach students with disabilities and special needs together with their classmates in regular classes. As we are a comprehensive school, it is possible to obtain various qualifications. The idea of inclusion together with offering every student the best future possibilities regardless of any special needs or their social/ethnic background is crucial to our understanding of education.
Our school is located in Detmold, a mid-sized town with 75.000 inhabitants in North Rhine-Westphalia. Detmold is famous for its half-timbered town centre, for the nearby Teutoburger Forest (famous due to the Battle of Varus) and the Externsteine (an interesting rock formation). Bigger cities like Bielefeld (335.000 inhabitants) or Paderborn (150.000 inhabitants) are just around the corner. Famous cities like Düsseldorf, Cologne or Münster as well as the metropolitan region Ruhr are easily reachable.
We are looking for an Irish school that is interested in a collaboration with us. We have various ideas: Firstly, we are interested in establishing student exchanges to broaden the pupils’ cultural horizons, offering them possibilities to grow through stays abroad. By the way, all of our students learn English, so there is no need for your students to speak German. Secondly, we are also interested in project-based exchanges and thirdly, we would love to offer our teachers and especially our student teachers the possibility to gain experiences through short-time internships. Of course, we would love to welcome your teachers and trainee teachers at our school, too!

About 1600 students between the age of 10 to 18 attend our multi-faceted secondary school in Mülheim an der Ruhr. Our staff and parents are most welcoming and always eager to commit in extra-curricular activities.
We are a certified “Europaschule” and are very pleased to look back on years of experience with exchanges and other projects in England, France, Ireland, Poland, and Spain. Those involved emphasise their great experiences and the special bonds that have been created. The cultural exchange as well as the practice of language learning have always been a striking goal. Nevertheless, we are more than open to initiate science-oriented projects or activities in social studies.
Mülheim an der Ruhr is located in the heart of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region in North Rhine-Westphalia. It borders with Essen and Duisburg, two exciting cities to discover multiple attractions along the Industrial Heritage Trail. In Essen you can explore the former coal mine “Zeche Zoll Verein” which has been inscribed into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. The “Landschaftpark Nord” in Duisburg offers a unique chance to get an insight into an inoperative steel production plant. The state capital Düsseldorf (and its airport) can be reached within a few minutes by car or public transport and is also an entertaining tourist attraction. Moreover, Cologne and the former federal capital Bonn can easily be visited on a day trip. As you can see – the “Ruhrpott” has a lot to offer!
We are looking for a partner school in Ireland to organise an exchange programme for students on an annual basis. We are also happy to engage in further (digital) projects in different fields of studies and various age groups. We and our students will be very pleased to hear back from you soon.

The Gymnasium Altenholz is located right at the Baltic Sea close to Kiel, the capital of Germany's northern most federal state (Schleswig-Holstein). We are a grammar school with about 1000 students aged 10 to 18 years. 90 teachers work here in Altenholz with its about 15.ooo inhabitants. Denmark is a two-hour drive, Hamburg one hour.
WHAT WE DO EXCEPT TEACHING SUBJECTS
Our school runs a sailing club and various other sport activities like beach volleyball or handball, athletics and cross-country.
Exchanges have been established with France, the Netherlands and recently Denmark and Italy. Most exchanges are based on activities like Sports or Music. Our school offers warm meals and we put a strong emphasis on social skills (Streitschlichter, paramedic training, student participation). Overall our school is known for its warm atmosphere as well as high standard of education.
WHAT MAKES ENGLISH SPECIAL FOR US
Modern equipment enables us to organize internet based activities like skype/ emails or peer-to-peer methods. We firmly believe in supporting the idea of the independent learner who becomes increasingly self-reliant and uses knowledge and skills to participate in the learning process.
English has an exceptional importance at our school. Unfortunately we do not have a regular partner school for this language. Students from the local primary school receive four years of so-called immersion language training, they then later continue learning English on an advanced level at our school. From Year 7 on Geography and later History are taught bilingually in English. We are proud to successfully offer a specialised Languages class in Oberstufe (the last three years of secondary schooling before qualifying for university). This class primarily focusses on English but also French, Spanish and Latin (and of course German).
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
For the last six years we have been conducting study trips to the Republic of Ireland, visiting Dublin and the west coast. All of our students return from Ireland with a lot of memorable experiences and love for the country. Actually quite a few decided to spend a gap year there after leaving with the final diploma.
The English Department thinks it would be a great benefit to befriend a school in Ireland in order to enliven these trips by visiting the school and hopefully organizing an exchange or a joint project (Literature, History, Politics, Economics). Our staff includes teachers that teach both English as well as Business and Politics, History, Geography, Sports and German. So a wide range of possible projects seems worthwhile and realistic.
We would like to give our pupils the chance to apply and broaden their language skills and to participate in the European idea directly by meeting and working together wit common Europeans of their age group.

The Gymnasium Philippinum is located in the medieval town of Marburg, in the centre of Hesse between Frankfurt and Kassel or Fulda and
Limburg.
We have been teaching Latin as a first foreign language since 1527, but as much the acquisition of English plays a major role in
our curriculum. In addition to the actual foreign language lessons, we also offer courses in chemistry, politics and economics taught in
English.
Our school specialises in music, languages, mathematics and sports. However, our pupils also repeatedly show outstanding
achievements in the other subject groups.
We are currently looking for a new partner school in Ireland adding to our exchange programme we have been enhancing for many
years. This would be for example desirable for the 15+ age group.
Further information can be found on our website:

Our school, with approximately 720 students, is nestled in the beautiful region of Bavaria, located between Stuttgart and Munich. Our students, aged between 11 and 18, engage in a comprehensive curriculum that allows them to study up to three modern foreign languages: English, French and Spanish. Furthermore, we offer a humanistic and sciences-based branch in our educational program, emphasizing a well-rounded approach to learning.
We are enthusiastic about fostering cross-cultural connections and providing our students with opportunities to broaden their horizons through immersion in different cultures and educational systems. We believe that partnering with a school in Ireland would be an enriching experience for our students and theirs.

Our school is a secondary school with a good reputation. There are about 600 pupils aged 10 to 16 at our school and we are trying to establish a students' exchange for pupils at the age of 13 or 14 who have been learning English for three or four years. You will get more information on our website: www.realschule-hoechberg.de
We would also be the perfect exchange partner because Höchberg belongs to the city of Würzburg, which is one of the most northern cities in Bavaria and therefore lies at the heart of Germany on the river "Main". It has got a long history and lots of culture. Its highlights are the residence, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fortress "Marienberg", the dome, the old bridge "Alte Mainbrücke" or the laboratory where Röntgen discovered x-rays. Würzburg is also famous for its wine that not only Goethe and Kleist enjoyed.

Luisen-Gymnasium is a traditional secondary school in Hamburg. We have about 960 pupils between 11 and 18 years of age. The subjects of music and natural sciences are especially promoted. But also the languages are of great importance to us. For some years now we have successfully taken part in several school exchange projects. So we would be very happy about a partner in Ireland for a regular exchange of pupils!
Hamburg offers a lot of sights and is also not far from Berlin, just 90 minutes by train. We would be happy to welcome you as our new school exchange partner. If you are interested please contact Heike Simon

Marion Dönhoff Gymnasium has been firmly rooted in the western part of the city of Hamburg for over one hundred years. It is an all-day, co-educational secondary school (students’ age between 11 and 18) with a subject-oriented general education approach. At our school, we live a friendly and open atmosphere. We particularly emphasise our students’ independence in the learning process, with a special focus on digital education. Equally important to us is social learning, which involves experiencing values such as tolerance, sincerity, and the willingness to take responsibility. The spacious, green school grounds encourage incorporating nature into the daily life of our school. As Germany's second largest city (and, proudly, the one with the most bridges), Hamburg offers not only a unique post and two famous football teams, but also a variety of cultural venues, museums and sights.
We are looking for a secondary school in Ireland to establish a partnership for regular student exchanges and other projects.

In 2009 the Volkswagen Group has donated the gift of establishing a school, Neue Schule Wolfsburg, to the City of Wolfsburg on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of its founding. The school’s education programme will subscribe to the following five keynote areas of emphasis: 1. internationality, 2. science & technology, 3. economics, 4. art & culture, and 5. the cultivation of students’ individual gifts and talents.
The international orientation of the school is characterised by more than just an emphasis on foreign languages, but rather will also be an inherent element of the content taught in other subjects and will be expressed in the curriculum interweave as well as defining the school’s cultural profile.
Hence we are keen on organizing an exchange program for students of the age of 13 and are interested in establishing any other links (e.g. topic-related projects, letter writing, e-mail messages, individual exchanges during breaks etc.).
Schulsteckbrief

Teachers, parents, and students are enthusiastic to welcome Irish students in Munich and send some over in return. Depending on what you are looking for, we have thought of conducting the exchange with pupils who are 14 years or older. So far we have thought of one or two weeks each in Munich and in Ireland. We have many parents who would like their children to take part in such an exchange, but we are happy to take a small group of five to ten students as well, if that suits you better. The idea of having an exchange with Ireland came up because there are several fans of your country amongst our staff – I myself spent a year as a language assistant in Tralee eight years ago.
Most historical sights of Munich can be reached on foot from the school, which itself is a listed Art Nouveau building in Schwabing in the centre of the city. Besides sightseeing and spending time with the host families, we would like to allow the students to take a glimpse into our regular classes as well. Day trips to destinations like Neuschwanstein, Salzburg, Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site, Nuremberg would round off the activities.
Oskar-von-Miller-Gymnasium was founded by King Ludwig II. in 1864 and is one of the few grammar schools of the city which has a long-established tradition. It is attended by roughly a thousand 10 to 19-year-olds. We are specialized in languages, whereby the first foreign language is Latin, followed by English in the second year, and then Italian or French, as well as optionally Spanish. We have had yearly exchanges with Italy and France for many years. Our students are engaged in a wide range of extracurricular activities, especially in music and theatre, and therefore many are involved in our drama groups.

Our school, Otto-Hahn-Schule, a co-educative integrated comprehensive school situated in the North of Frankfurt/ Main, Germany, is looking for a partnering Irish school for a mutual exchange programme.
As a comprehensive school our approximately 1200 students are divided in 3 different streams, offering lower secondary levels to year 5 (equalling Junior Cycle), a secondary level up to year 6 (equalling Transition Year) and a higher secondary degree course equivalent to the Irish Leaving Certificate. All streams offer English as a first foreign language starting in year 1.
Situated to the north of Frankfurts bustling city life, Nieder-Eschbach and our school not only offer a protected and secure environment for any visiting pupils but also the buzzing cultural life of a large city and banking capital of Germany within easy reach.
Otto-Hahn-Schule has already established twin-schools with Toulouse (France), Cracow (Poland) and Hódmezövásáhely (Hungary) and is looking for a similar arrangement with an Irish school. We would like to arrange a mutual exchange of about one to two weeks duration but would also consider other options like pen friend programmes or the like.

The Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium Göttingen is looking for a partner school in Ireland. We would like to establish a long-term twinning with an Irish secondary school to support our students' awareness of international diversity and intercultural communication, in the form of letters, emails and visits, hopefully. Why Ireland? Because we feel the European idea should be lived and because several of our staff have a strong affinity towards the country.
Our school is large (ca. 1200 students and 120 teachers), co-ed, with a long tradition of exchanges to European, American and Asian countries, which are very popular (especially with our girls, so we would be happy about an Irish all girls’ school, too).
OHG’s focus is on music (special classes and several ensembles and choirs) and maths/science (national competitions), second languages are English, French, Spanish, Latin. Our elective subjects and extracurricular activities cover a wide range between sports, drama, bilingual courses, history, more science, business, debating (national competition) and social causes. We strive to offer our students many chances to grow and excel, together and individually, e.g. in a "challenge" project or the staging of a musical. International contacts play a major part, too, in the form of exchanges and projects.
The school is situated in Göttingen, a middle-sized town in central Germany, with a picturesque town centre and an old university of globally high ranking (Georg-August-Universität), in pleasant scenery, very well connected with all parts of the country (e.g. Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg).
We would be happy to hear from you and answer any questions you might have.

The Städtische Stiftsgymnasium Xanten is the European school of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and offers young people from Europe the opportunity to become a member of the European class for one year, which we will set up again in the introductory phase of our upper school level in the coming school year.
This class combines eight foreign guests between the ages of 15 and 16 and twice as many hosts from Xanten of the same age. For six months each, the guests live in the families of two hosts.
The pupils of the European class have common lessons in the subjects English, history, mathematics, biology, religious studies, art and sport; the language of instruction is English. The foreign participants are therefore expected to have no knowledge of German, but a good knowledge of English. While the Xanten students have German lessons, German as a foreign language is available to the guests. In this way they also learn the language of their host country. The guests can also learn Spanish as a new foreign language together with our students and, if interested, attend other courses (in German).
There are also joint extracurricular events, such as excursions and European seminars. These are included in the cost of 1200 euros for the school year, as well as room and board, insurance cover and learning materials.
We expect a high degree of open-mindedness and willingness to get involved with other people and cultures from all members of the European class.

We are a German high school (Gymnasium) with nearly 900 students between 10 and 19 years old. We are looking for a contact with a school that is interested in establishing an exchange program of students between 14 and 17 years. Theodor-Fontane-Gymnasium is situated in Strausberg, a small town in the vicinity of Berlin. Currently, we have exchanges with France and Russia, but we want to establish Irish contacts for our new language class, in which some subjects are taught in English.
The Wilhelm-Leuschner-Schule is a secondary school (Mittelstufenschule) with 500 pupils from 10 to 16 years old, located in the city of Darmstadt in the state of Hesse. Darmstadt is 30km south of Frankfurt am Main and has 160,000 inhabitants.
Our school is looking for a partner school with whom to establish an exchange programme for pupils from 12 to 16 years old.
