Selma Selman (b. 1991, Bihac, BIH) currently resides and works in Amsterdam, following her award of a Rijksakademie residency in 2021. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Banja Luka University's Department of Painting (2014) and a Master of Fine Arts in Transmedia, Visual, and Performing Arts from Syracuse University (2018).
In her artwork, Selma is dedicated to protecting and empowering female bodies, advocating for the collective self-emancipation of oppressed women through a multi-scalar approach. Her pursuit of contemporary political resistance is rooted in her personal experiences with various forms of oppression.
Selma's recent exhibitions include venues such as the Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt (2024); Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2024); Röda Sten Konsthall, Göteborg (2024); Gropius Bau, Berlin (2023); Documenta 15, Kassel (2022); Manifesta 14, Pristina (2022); Manifold, Amsterdam, NL; Theaterfestival Boulevard, 's-Hertogenbosch; Kunstraum Innsbruck, Innsbruck; Fries Museum, Leeuwarden, NL (2022); MO Museum Vilnius, Vilnius (2022); and Kasseler Kunstverein Museum Fridericianum, Kassel (2021), among others. She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions and festivals worldwide.
Selma Selman is the founder and visionary of "Get The Heck To School," an organization dedicated to empowering Roma girls worldwide who face societal ostracization and poverty.
