Following the death of his daughter and coping with an estranged wife who does not speak after the tragedy, Alister Cox, a British watchmaker, travels to China. Despot and emperor Qiánlóng has invited him because the emperor wants to control not just the country but also time. Cox is to manufacture a special watch that measures time for each individual.
