Christa Wolf wrote an autobiographical story about her escape from the Prussian province of Brandenburg in 1945, which she experienced as a fifteen-year-old and wrote down in 1971. Charlotte, the narrator’s mother, always seems to have everything under control. She’s the linchpin of the family. But she completely ignores the streams of refugees from the east and the approaching front until one day she has to face the facts.
