The story of two men - the Italian journalist, philosopher and communist politician Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937) and the novel’s character Anton Stövers, whose scientific career and love life have come to a standstill. Stövers sets off on the trail of the Marxist thinker in Rome, but he is soon distracted from his quest by a young woman.
