Ilse Aichinger’s poetic work is considered a beacon of post-war German-language poetry. The collection comprises almost one hundred short poems in simple, reduced language. Here, largely negative experiences and thoughts coexist with something good; a small comfort in the midst of despair. The poems counter social expectations with the desire for independence and a personal opinion.
