13 stories in which melancholy male first-person narrators grapple mostly with the ageing process and their lives. In the opening narrative Farewell, the managing director of a magazine distribution company observes his old apple tree from the window – the tree stands in the rain and "presses forth persistently from its mutilated body one blossom after another", whereas the younger trees "in the neighbouring gardens are already in boastful bloom".
