Anselm Kiefer

(born 08.03.1945 in Donaueschingen), painter, sculptor

Anselm Kiefer studied law and Romance languages and literature in Freiburg for a time, but his interest soon turned completely towards artistic creation and as a result he studied painting with Peter Dreher in Freiburg and later at the Karlsruhe Art Academy with Horst Antes. While he gained fame above all for his works of art, Anselm Kiefer has also frequently written essays as well as publishing excerpts from his diaries in 2011: "Notizbücher. Band 1: 1998-1999" (“Notebooks, Volume 1”, trans. by Tess Lewis, Seagull Books). In addition to numerous art awards, Anselm Kiefer received the 2008 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, which was awarded for the first time to a visual artist. Kiefer lives in Paris.
