Joy (Jharna)
The theme is women’s freedom. People often associate women living in peace and as they want as a movement of resistance. But women’s freedom shouldn’t be alarming, and it's high time it is normalised. The embroidered artwork is a portrayal of uninhibited joy, a sense of peace & freedom for women, non-binary and trans — a seldom sight in public spaces.
About the work
I am eternally drawn to people living their best lives in their own safe spaces. But this feeling of freedom & safety should extend to the outdoors as well. People of all genders should be able to access & enjoy public spaces. Women (cis & trans) and Non-Binary people going about their day and having a moment of visible joy shouldn’t be seen as an act of defiance. It is after all a human right. Unfortunately, simple activities such as lying on the grass in the park or standing under a waterfall is often seen as an act of courage rather than simply being. These ladies in my artwork portray uninhibited joy, a sense of peace & freedom which we seldom see in public spaces. Freedom for me means the comfort of “just being” & feeling safe in public spaces for all people.
