Opening into the field
This visual project reflects on the meaning of Freedom in the context of a public space – the Maidan. It was developed based on photographs and on-site sketches from the Oval Maidan in Mumbai and the Maidan of Kolkata. The drawings are different “windows” of uses/qualities of these spaces that address Freedom: whether to freedom of activities, movements, atmospheres, people and plants, the Maidan is here perceived as a free space. It unlocks several social uses and allows every person to use the space on equal terms. TheMaidan lives through its users' continuous and communal daily use, slowly cementing values of local democracy and equality within the cities.
