Martha
by Rainer Werner Fassbinder
1974 | 112 min.| col. | German with English subtitles
In the courtyard of the German Embassy, she encounters a man who mesmerises her instantly. A while later, she runs into him at a friend’s wedding and once again feels a powerful attraction. Helmut Salomon and Martha Hyer marry. As soon as they have they set off on their honeymoon, the power games begin and Helmut tries to “train” his wife. On their return, Helmut rents a magnificent villa and, little by little, cuts Martha off from the outside world in order to mould her into his creation. The oppressive and agonising dynamics within their relationship instil in Martha a growing suspicion that Helmut may have intentions of causing her harm.
