International Relations. Young Architects from Germany

This group exhibition focuses on international projects completed since 2004, by 15 German architectural firms.

The selected examples illustrate a broad range of skills of a young generation of architects. These range from construction, interior design and urban design to landscape architecture and show how young architects approach working in new and foreign environments, how they redefine and add to existing buildings, and how they create new ones under unusual conditions. These architects come up with sensitive solutions for challenges in architecture today, always with an eye on the future, sustainability, and new technologies.

GRAFT Architekten have been working on reconstructing a quarter of New Orleans left badly damaged after Hurricane Katrina. The architects at planwerk/plan&werk initiated urban development and regeneration projects in the Romanian region of Transylvania. The rheinflügel group refitted a standard logistics container as a mobile art display for Kunsthaus Zug in Switzerland. Meuser Architekten designed three European embassies in one building in Astana, capital city of Kazakhstan, where they had to meet the highest security standards. plasma studio worked with international star architects to transform Hotel Puerta América in Madrid into a new design icon. MUELLER KNEER ASSOCIATES created an attractive new bar and restaurant in a former cotton warehouse in Manchester, England. Working on the outskirts of the US city of Pittsburgh, ian shaw architekten brilliantly translated the corporate identity of an engineering firm into architecture. GS_architekten and Perler und Scheurer Architekten together built the Ferry Porsche Congress Center in the Austrian town of Zell am See, adding a key building to the town’s centre. Haberland Architekten extended an existing listed school complex in the Swiss town of Winterthur. KUEHN MALVEZZI also successfully combined old and new with their Lauder Business School in Vienna. MIR built a residential house with a remarkable sculptural quality on a small plot of land in Amsterdam. Behet bondzio lin architekten created a residence with a spectacular use and experience of space in Taichung, Taiwan. FAR frohn&rojas used unconventional materials to build a tent-like dwelling in Santiago de Chile. In Hangzhou, China, Levin Monsigny Landschaftsarchitekten created a modern landscape park and museum gardens for the Liangzhu Culture Museum.

Contrary to today’s global media interest in the spectacular and the star, this exhibition presents innovative architectural projects that confidently and quietly take a pragmatic approach, concentrating entirely on the locations for which they were created.

An exhibition by the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations e. V. (ifa), Stuttgart, in cooperation with the Federal Chamber of German Architects e. V. (BAK), Berlin. Media partner: Deutsche Welle (DW).
