Workshop Description

Children’s books shape the world view we grow up with. It is important for children to be able to recognize themselves in stories, illustrations and narratives and, at the same time, to learn about the different realities of life around them.

With this workshop we would like to address questions such as:
  • How can alternative, under-represented narratives, voices and images be introduced?
  • What are the challenges and opportunities in local publishing for children's books that promote diversity?
  • How can we collaborate and share knowledge to enhance our writing practice?
The workshop will cover the following topics:
  • Status quo and relevance of diversity in (Sri Lankan) children's books.
  • Insights from experienced speakers on storytelling needs and challenges in local publishing.
  • Ethical storytelling using the UN Child Rights Convention as a framework.
  • Storytelling through a feminist lens: How to identify and challenge stereotypes while striving for contemporary portrayals of roles and characters.
  • Collaborative roundtable discussions to identify under-represented narratives and voices in local children's literature.
  • Knowledge sharing and exchange, writing practices and creative techniques with fellow writers.
The workshop will be led by writer and editor Chantal-Fleur Sandjon from Germany, with contributions from author and teacher of drama and speech Nadishka Aloysisus, Widya Kumarasinghe (Everystory.lk) and Ramya Chamalie Jirasinghe (Kindernothilfe e.V.).

We invite Sinhala, Tamil, and English children's book writers from Sri Lanka to join us! Whether you're an aspiring writer or an experienced author. The workshop participation is free, please make sure that you are available on both workshop days. Limited spots available.
