'Akaler Shandhaney' - In Search of Famine by Mrinal Sen

Legendary filmmaker Mrinal Sen is well known for his radical artistic practice and he was an influential figure in the dissemination of ideas and practices of third cinema in India. To mark Sen's birth centenary we have dedicated the February Film Forum to screen one of his films 'Akaler Shandhaney' - In Search of Famine (115"|1980| India) on 07 February 2024 at 6.00p.m.

A film crew comes to a village to make a film about the famine which killed five million Bengalees in 1943. The film documents the life among the film crew, life of the villagers  and tensions of on-location filmmaking. 

Cast includes Dhritiman Chatterjee, Smita Patil, Gita Sen, Rajen Tarafdar, Sreela Mazumder, Radhamohan Bhattacharya, Jayanta Chowdhury, Dipankar De

This film won Silver Bear award at Berlin Film Festival in 1981.

The Film Forum curated by Anomaa Rajakaruna is a monthly pre-view format for film makers and industry professionals to view unreleased, new Sri Lankan feature and short films together. The screenings are followed by an open discussion with the film makers and other professionals moderated by Anomaa Rajakaruna.
