Encouraging Vietnamese and international youths to critically examine colonialism in Vietnam through artistic and creative formats.
A collaboration between Goethe-Institut Hanoi and Vietnam Global Outreach (VGO), the “r-e-t-e-l-l-m-e-” initiative returns in 2024 with a new edition. On the theme “Sketches of eras“, the project seeks to encourage youths to critically examine and question colonialism and its lasting impact in Vietnam through the use of artistic and creative formats, namely documentary film and architecture tours.

The program is designed for Vietnamese and international youth aged 18 to 26, as well as members of the general public who have an interest in Vietnamese culture and architecture. Youths from ethnic minority groups and other minority groups (including people with disabilities) are encouraged to apply.

Activities will be conducted across several historic locations in northern Vietnam, namely Hanoi, Pho Hien and Hai Phong. The duration of the program spans from September to November 2024.

Requirements for participants:

  • Vietnamese and International youth: 18-26 years old, currently living, working, or studying in Hanoi.
  • Requirements: Good English listening and speaking skills (equivalent to IELTS 6.5 or higher). A spirit of learning, dynamism, and an interest in the project's topic. Willingness to fully commit to participating in all required events according to the project schedule (Please refer to the „Main activities and schedule” section for more information).
  • Number of participants: 20
  • Priority: Youth from minority and vulnerable groups (The program is open to deaf-mute youth and ethnic minority students). Members of V.GO.

Main activities and schedule

  • 04/09 – 22/09
Recruitment and interview of participants
  • 29/09 (9:00 – 17:00 Chủ Nhật)
Orientation session, introduction, team formation, and project preparation.
  • 12/10 – 13/10 (9:00 AM – 5:00 PM Saturday & Sunday)
Capacity training. This includes training sessions and knowledge sharing on the subject of postcolonialism, architecture during and after the colonial period, as well as basic skills in video and content creation, interview techniques, information gathering, and cultural tour design.
  • 14/10 – 30/10
03 thematic workshops (02 hours/workshop).
Led by experts involved in the capacity training. The workshops provide participants with additional knowledge, methods, and examples on approaching Vietnam’s architecture before and after the colonial period, as well as the postcolonial context in Vietnam.
The workshops combine architectural knowledge with storytelling through film or cultural tours.
  • 14/10 – 20/11
Participants will be divided into 03 groups, choosing between Hanoi, Pho Hien, or Hai Phong to conduct surveys, research, and film.
Each group will receive technical and content support from expert advisors throughout the group's creation, design, and execution of their work. (These trips will be arranged by the group within the designated timeframe and carried out with financial support from the organizing committee.)
The groups will have 02 coaching sessions with experts on architectural knowledge and video-making techniques (Time to be decided by the group and the experts). 
  • 20/11 – 30/11
Organize 02 cultural tours (for 15 – 20 Vietnamese and international guests) to 2 of the 3 aforementioned locations, combined with a discussion session and a screening of the works led by the participating groups. These trips will be arranged by the group within the designated timeframe and carried out with financial support from the organizing committee.
