Event description

A Vietnamese – German theatre production

Since the official establishment of diplomatic relations, Vietnam and Germany have had extensive cooperation in the field of theatre and performing arts. Many German theatre practitioners have come to Vietnam through exchange and cooperation programs, and numerous German plays have been performed on Vietnamese stages over the past 50 years. Conversely, we have seen an increasing number of Vietnamese-origin artists working in various theatres in Germany, contributing to the diversity of the theatre scene there.

To mark this special anniversary, the Goethe-Institut Hanoi and the Youth Theatre are collaborating on an entirely new theatre project. At the invitation of the Goethe-Institut Hanoi, renowned Austrian Berlin-based playwright Thomas Köck will write a brand-new play based on a contemporary theme in Vietnam. The script is the result of a month-long stay in Hanoi, filled with many discoveries, conversations, and inspirational journeys by Thomas in the city. With the creative participation of German-Vietnamese stage artist Lina Oanh Nguyễn, the play will be staged by the team of artists at the Youth Theatre and directed by stage director Đào Duy Anh.

The play is expected to premiere in September at the Youth Theatre Vietnam, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Vietnam-Germany diplomatic relations.
